1. Newell-Fonda
2. MMC
3. Glidden-Ralston
4. Fremont Mills
5. HLV
6. West Bend-Mallard
7. Colo-Nesco
8. Janesville
9. Don Bosco
10. Clarksville
Looking in... GRTA, North Iowa, Exira/EHK

Here is how I would have my preseason top 10:

1.) Newell-Fonda
2.) Glidden-Ralston
3.) West Bend Mallard
4.) MMC
5.) GTRA
6.) Janesville
7.) Coon Rapids-Bayard
8.) HLV
9.) Don Bosco
10.) Northwood-Kensett
Knocking on the door (in no specific order): Lenox, Clarksville, North Iowa, Boyer Valley

The top 3 teams return a ton this year. I could easily have them flip flopped in any order between them without a problem. Western half of the state I feel this year is extremely deep with a lot of really good teams. Eastern half has some good teams there at the top too but the depth just isn't there compared to the western side.

It will be interesting to see how CR-B handles the loss of Evans as he is lost for the year with a knee injury and most of their line. I would agree western Iowa is looking awful strong this year! I also believe Boyer Valley lost too many weapons.

I agree I will like to see how they handle the loss of Evans. He was an animal on the field. They do have a lot of young talent coming up though along with a very good coaching staff so it will be interesting. If Evans is still there I have them probably in my top 4 or 5. I am unsure about Boyer Valley as well as I considered taking them out of my list of other teams. I know they were very up and down last year beating both Exira-EHK and Newell Fonda (early though) and then tripped up in the playoffs to HLP I believe. Have some very solid young players coming up but they are very very untested at the varsity level. I think the potential to be very good is there but only time will tell with them.

Also on a side note...Week 1 game against Newell Fonda and West Bend should be a real hum dinger. Would love to go up to West Bend and watch that one!

Alot of talent returning for quite a few teams this season. Should be an exciting year!! Cant wait for next Friday!

I think Central Elkader will be right up there too. Never realized how much they bring back from last year. Only thing that will hurt them like I believe it did last year was the weak district they are in. They are head and shoulders the best team in that district so it will be hard to judge them like it was last year. Buck you might be the first person to have some faith in Exira-EHK being a top 10 team after what all they lost last year. Losing Peppers is enough but also losing an entire starting line, leading receiver and your second leading scorer according to quikstats from last year. That is a tall task to replace.

Any week 0 games that are worth keeping an eye on this season? I know of a couple games but haven't looked to see what else is on tap for this Friday across the state.

Central, Elkader I believe is a team that will once again be tough but I am waiting to see how they fill the huge hole in the backfield left by Fitzgerald. I know their QB is returning but not many receivers do, plus in my opinion defenses were focusing on the running game which leads to an easier passing game. I think Ehrhardt is a good player and will have another good year, so nothing against him. Like mentioned before, their district unfortunately is not going to be overall the toughest but if they can run through it again, don't be surprised to them back in the rankings.

High90 - I know Exira EHK lost alot due to graduation but look at NF last season. They lost every starter on offense and defense from a state semifinal team the previous season. Last season they won state. I like to believe that tradition never graduates. Also, as far as I know the coaches are still there, which will play a big role in getting their young guys ready. I'm sure they will be in the discussion when the end of the season comes around.

Buck - I agree with you that coaches do play a big part of getting kids ready to play and properly prepared each week but I am more of a see it before I believe it sort of guy. I would love to see them back in the discussion as they have been one of the power teams in the class the last few years going something like 31-5 or so in the last 3 seasons. Would hate to see something like that go away!

I was at the game. HLV is solid. They played downhill on defense and hit like they did last year. They still don't throw the ball all that well. 91 yds passing and 44 was on the screen for a TD befor the half. So 6-10 and 47 yards otherwise. Very pedestrian.

Springville really struggles to throw so that allowed HLV to load the box and blitz inside quite a bit and get a lot of TFL's and put pressure when Spring attempted to throw.

HLV is best when they are in the gun and Kriegel is keeping it. Otherwise it's ISO and FB ctr. If Springville had tackled better it would have been closer longer but when Spring didn't convert on the first poss they had the ball, they didn't sniff the end zone again.

Best of luck to both teams the rest of the way. It was a beautiful night for football. Victor may have the worst parking for a football game EVER! Nice field though. Curious why the home stands are on the side facing the sun but anyway....

The rumor is the QB for Central Elkader Derek Ehrhardt tore up a shoulder in practice and is out for the year. Can anyone confirm this? That would be a huge hit if it's true.

Why would I answer any type of personal question here to someone I don't know? Besides what difference does it make? The injury is confirmed because the kid has posted it online that he is out. Now I'm Just trying to confirm if it is season ending because it could make a difference in the rankings.

Is this Ehrhardt we are talking about? That is an unfortunate loss for Central if he is out. Hopefully its not as bad as people are saying and he can come back this year and help them as they should still be OK in the regular season with the schedule that is in front of them.

Clearly Clarksville isn't after getting monstered last week by Colo 82-16. Time will only tell with Colo if they deserve it or not. Wont really find out with them until maybe when they play Meskwaki Settlement in their 4th game and if not in that game then not till they go to Don Bosco later in the year.

Hearing about Derek Ehrhardt's injury is very unfortunate. Really good athlete, that is the leader for the Central Elkader squad, so hopefully he is able to make a speedy recover.

Speaking on Colo Nesco, according to Quik Stats, their best player from last year isn't even on the roster, nor did he play in the first game. Christian Reischauer was their most dynamic player from last year's team. I've had conversations with him before, and spoke to him this summer and he seemed excited for the season. Just wondering if anyone has any idea what's going there? He's a better basketball player than football player, so maybe he's focusing on hoops more? Granted, Colo still put up 82 points. I guess we'll find out if they are top ten when they do visit Meskwaki in a few weeks.

Best of luck to all 8-man teams tonight in Week 1!
