POLL: Newell Fonda Vs Bosco

Was looking at Gilbertville on google maps and cant find a football field in the town. Where do they play at?

The field is has only been there for three seasons, so Google Maps may not have an updated aerial photo of the area. It is just outside of town as you head South out of town on the Main street through town.

I'll try and get this thread going.
Last seasons Don Bosco team had a nice group of seniors, headed by Hogan and Becker. I believe losing Becker will be a bigger blow to this team then Hogan because Svoboda has stepped in and filled Hogans role. Becker was a beast last season, especially at the Dome, and they haven't had that impactful defensive player this season. I have not seen DB play yet this season but looking at their scores they are very good. Although, they have not played a very tough schedule, strength of schedule is 48th in the state according to BCMoore. Having the #1 defense and #2 offense in the state still says something. They are riding a 25 game win streak and are 37-1 the past 3 seasons.
Newell-Fonda lost every starter from last season. With no starting experience on the team and a very tough schedule to start this season off, this team struggled early on. They were in every game but failed to make the big play to win those games. They have been on a tear ever since, beating at the time the #4, #14 and #2 ranked teams. In the playoffs they have beat two very tough and physical teams in Guthrie Center and Coon Rapids-Bayard. Their defense has been fantastic all season. Having the 7th toughest schedule in the state and they still have the 7th best defense, very impressive. NF defenses have struggled against athletic QB's in the past and they will have their hands full with Svoboda. They have turned the ball over a couple times and have had way too many penalties the past few games and it almost cost them against CR-B. DB is a more talented team then the past few teams have been and they will take full advantage of those mistakes. If they can clean that up and contain Svoboda I think NF wins. If not then I see DB winning. Either way I can't wait for this game to get started! Weather is supposed to be 45 degrees and not much wind. Should be a great night for some football!

First of all if you haven't seen either team play i dont know how you can project a winner. Second of all they obviously they dont need a impactful defensive player if there teams defense is rated 1 overall.

BigPlayssss, The defense is first overall because of the weak schedule. Plain and simple. I think what Buck was trying to say was that they don't have that one defensive player that stands out and makes some big time plays this year. Last year that one guy was Becker. They had some great players on defense last year, but Becker was the number one guy.

Everyone that knows football knows that team defense will trump a good defense with one standout. This years team is stronger defensively and poorer offensively (despite the increased scores).

What the dons are going to miss going forward is their passing game from last year, not a single defender.

Obviously team defense is better then one individual. All I was getting at was what 285 said. I don't see them having that one stud who makes the big plays when needed. Becker had 13.5 tackles in the championship game last year with 6.5 tfl and 3.5 sacks. He almost single handily shut down exira. But I have not seen them play and I am only going by stats and what I have heard. So maybe they do have that player.

Bigplays- just so ya know I watched NF play 8 games this season.

Notlongago have you seen DB play? Why don't they pass the ball? Can svoboda pass? Does he have any receivers?

I think I can answer for him here. Bosco doesn't pass too much because honestly...they don't need to. With one of the biggest lines in the state and a top running QB and strong backfield support, they don't need the risk of putting the ball in the air. Not to say that if they did pass there would be turnovers because I honestly can't say. Svoboda can pass, but only if the coaches think he needs to. He has a deep speedy recieving core if he needs it. So with the philosophy of "if something isn't broke, don't fix it," I believe DB keeps the ball on the ground for 80% of the plays and comes out with a decent margin. Something like 60-22 and they roll into the dome.

Thanks for the insight. Do you think they will pass the ball if and when their run game is shut down? I agree with that philosophy of if something isnt broke, dont fix it. But they havent met a good enough defense that can shut their run game down yet.
Bold prediction. NF hasnt allowed over 33 pts all season.

This game will be much closer than all of you are thinking it will be I feel. Coon Rapids was a run heavy team more so than Don Bosco and they slowed them down considerably and forced some turnovers when they forced CR-B to throw it. However, They definitely haven't seen an offense like Don Bosco who has an athletic mobile QB who rus it. Last time they did was at the Dome last year with Exira-EHK and we all know how that turned out for them. I think if Newell goes into this game thinking they can win a track meet they will get ran out of the building. While they do have a good offense it isn't anything like Don Bosco has as far as the ability to score. They need to have the mentality that this will be a slug fest in which they need to force a few turnovers and slow the game down as much as possible without any mistakes. Their best defense could be their own offense and keep that Don Bosco offense off the field. Wish I could go to this game as it will be a dandy!!

I agree that on paper, NF's defense is pretty good. But in most cases, their starters (I assume) have been in the whole game. This is because they have been in close games. Not that I know too much about their offense but if we are going off stats then NF's offense will be lucky to put up 3 touchdowns against Bosco. Not trying to offend ANYONE or start anything at all! But the way I see it, DB has aloud only 3 teams to put up 3 touchdowns this season. HLV 30-48, English Valleys 20-86, and Twin Cedars 20-64. 2 of those games being blowouts with relatively garbage time touchdowns and 1 game against a top team in HLV in which Svoboda was out before or close to halftime I believe. With 4 shutouts (including Turkey Valley averaging 40+ points per game) and 2 one score games, I think DB's defense is the best in 8 man. Their offense could be in the talk for the best as well. Again, not trying to make this into a "Bosco Hate" thread, just throwing some numbers out there for a good read! I'll stick with my prediction of DB being the team to beat until I'm proven wrong, hope it's a great game tonight though!

Comparing stat at this point does not matter. NF and Bosco are both here for a reason, they are excellent football teams. Newell obviously hasn't faced a team like Bosco and Bosco definitely hasn't faced a team like Newell. The weak schedule that Don Bosco has played could come back to haunt them at some point. Newell definitely has that advantage, taking on WBM, Exira, CRB, and GC and coming out on top in 3 of those games is impressive. The WBM game as Buck said was the first game of the year and they had no returning experience. This team has made huge strides over the course of the season and the close games could end up being huge for them tonight if the game is close in the fourth quarter. Don Bosco hasn't had a close game all year in the fourth quarter, how will they respond if it is within a touchdown? No Hogan this year to keep the team poised in the close games.

285 Champ is correct. Throw stats out the window at this point. DB hasn't played a tough team yet ? HLV is still alive and may make it to the Dome yet. TV has already been discussed.

How will they respond without Jake ? We shall see once someone forces that issue. I will tell you this though, everyone said these kids were toast once Jake graduated. Many fail to realize most of these kids had significant reps last season. They've been practicing against last years state champs for 2 to 3 years. Most of their " quality reps " have been on the practice field.

DB's kids have heart ! They don't panic and fold up. Not saying they can't be beat. There are several good teams in the state. Any team any given night as the saying goes.

The will to win is a cultural issue. Jake was surrounded by warriors that made it possible for him to showcase his talents. Many great athletes never get that chance. That Chuck Long guy was pretty darn good til he got to Detroit.

If anyone thinks that DB's kids will lay down if they get punched in the mouth you've got another thing coming. It's not in their DNA and it's not in the culture. They may fall behind or get knocked down, but they're gonna get back up and fight. Win or lose.

That's why I love Gilbertville and the Dons !

Good luck to all tonight. Stay healthy boys and enjoy the ride.

Win or lose, the good memories will last for ever.

OH BS!!! Your days of getting beat again are soon to come if your numbers are dropping so drastically. Your culture and DNA is no better than anyone else's. Get the chip off your shoulder! Its as simple as that.
