Playoffs - As Clear As Mud

A look at the leaders going into Week 8 proves out that the addition of Assumption, Wahlert and Xavier to the 3A ranks has not ended up in quite the dominance predicted. So a look around the State brings up some observations, but mostly questions.

District 1 & 2 - Sioux City Heelan has risen to the top and defeated Carroll by ample margin. The playoff pairings will have a big impact on the route, but I think Heelan is likely to play at the UNIDome.

District 3 & 4 - Fireworks are brewing. Undefeated West Delaware, giant killer Epworth, Western Dubuque, the ever capable and proven Solon and the playoff experienced Saints from Xavier. The playoff pairings will be huge in round 2 and beyond. It is hard to pick against Xavier, with back-to-back 4A runnerup finishes, but Solon has more championship rings, West Delaware has been strong thus far and the Bobcats have a lot to play for. My pick is Xavier, with the caveat about their heads being in it, so as to avoid dramatic mistakes or drops.

District 5 & 6 - It seems like another matchup between CCA and Assumption could be in the offing. I don't think seven turnovers will be the recipe that the Knights will bring to the game. But the playoff pairings might separate them for several rounds, and one or the other won't punch through the competition.

District 7 & 8 - Pella, Creston and Dallas Center Grimes with the latter two coming off a week 8 showdown. Look for Pella to tiptoe through the tulips unless and until they match up with the east side of the state or in the dome against Heelan. Dallas Center Grimes has won some close games, Pella hasn't had a close game. ADM-Adel and Carlisle can both "knock off" somebody in round 2.

It will all depend on pairings beyond round 1. It seems like District 4 would have the strongest 1, 2 and 3 seeds. District 8 might have the most balanced 1, 2, 3 and 4 seeds. I'd see the matchups made in round 2 as pivotal for the final representation in the UNIDome.

My overall champion pick is Xavier, but injuries, upsets and conditions can factor in aplenty.

I would certainly say that 3A isn't as "open and shut" as was projected with Assumption, Wahlert and Xavier dropping down from 4A.

District 6 is totally a mess right now. Bondurant has to be Newton gilbert has to beat Grinnell at the end of the season to have a chance to get in Nevada and Benton is out of the playoff hunt. District 6 could come down to points in the end to decide who the goes where..

I agree on District 6 and "discounted" the teams with respect to advancing deep in the playoffs. Not meant as a rebuke of any of those fine football towns and traditions, rather a realization that things were quite muddled.

Heelan looks like a lock. Clear sailing to the Dome. Same with Xavier. Solons only test was Xavier and you all saw what happened, 4 1st downs. Solons wins come from a weak schedule. Assumption just went down big. CCA. Pella looks like a shoe in.

Depends on what the state decides to do with Pella as far as pairings. I don't know if all three of Pella, Xavier and CCA would be able to make the Dome without two of them playing earlier. I mean, maybe, but we simply don't know. Playoff pairings are going to be an absolute mystery every round.

My friend has said it was the best football games he ever saw the back a forth was endless. Ballard pull out the Wishbone on BF. all of BF running back yard was up the middle mostly. If some one has a good FB to block the MLB they would have a field day. It's been A while sense BF has seen that. Petersen still got 267 yards on the ground.

I just looked through 3A again and noticed this thread. Taking a stab at who might win the final two weeks, these are the First Round Pairings I see...

#4 @ #1...
Webster City @ Sioux City Heelan
Spencer @ Carroll
Knoxville @ Creston
ADM(Adel) @ Newton
Fairfield @ Pella
Dubuque Wahlert @ Clear Creek-Amana
Grinnell@ West Delaware
Independence @ Western Dubuque

#3 @ #2...
Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley @ Sergeant Bluff-Luton
Decorah @ Waverly-Shell Rock
Winterset @ Humboldt
Greene County @ Carlisle
Solon @ Davenport Assumption
Gilbert @ Dallas Center-Grimes
Washington @ Cedar Rapids Xavier
Norwalk @ Ballard(Huxley)

A really tough draw for Solon if they have to travel to Assumption. Most of the other matchups don't look as competitive, but that's why they play the game.

Washington is playing very well right now. Their QB is a stud. I'm not sure Assumption will win at Washington on week #9. That would put them #3 in the district standings and on the road in round #1. With Screwloose's picks, Solon at DA is a heck of a first round game. He is predicting that Western Dubuque will beat Solon and win the district, which certainly could happen.

Knoxville hasn't made the playoffs since around the time Reagan was leaving office, so would be a big deal for them to get into the playoffs at any seed.

Big matchup this week with DCG and Creston for district champ. DCG has been on a roll, but struggled to beat Winterset on Friday. I still like DCG in this game, I think. What do you folks over in SW Iowa think? Is Creston going to take the district?

There is still so much up in the air regarding the first round pairings, that is why we all get to make predictions!

Yeah Regina is a pretty weak team, along with Washington and Mt.Vernon (all those teams have winning records) and don't forget Xavier is part of the weak schedule... the remainder of the district games that have been played were against the lower tier of the district (which is the case for 100% of the districts in iowa).

Correct Vroom

Regina 6-1 1A
Mt. Vernon 4-3 2A
Washington 4-3 3A

Will be an exciting year. Glad to see Solon playing up (Xavier) vs down. Will they sign up for other great area rivals, like Prairie? Maybe Assumption? Both of those would be better tests. Maybe Solon should go 2A?

THere was not a choice in playing Xavier... so don't understand your point. CRP has no desire to play Solon nor do any other Metro schools.
