Was everyone aware that teams eliminated from Rd2 last night DID NOT receive a playoff trophy? What a cock move by the IAHSAA! The final 16 teams have been receiving playoff trophies for as long as I can remember. Anybody have any insight as to what would make the IAHSAA think that this was actually a good idea???

Prior Rnd2 was the "Qrt Final" - which received trophies. $tate got what the $tate wanted.

No saying I agree but the rationale is that there is no other sport that 16 teams get trophies. Below is what places I think trophies are awarded for in each sport.

Football - 16 before, now 8
Cross Country - 3
Wrestling - 3
Basketball - 8
Track - 3
Soccer - 8
Baseball - 8

I am not sure on swimming, tennis, golf or bowling. So, in that case should 16 football teams get trophies?

You don't deserve a trophy for 16th....come on...

That's the problem with society....everybody has to receive a trophy......group hug...BS.....You're first or you're last

Awesome...a bunch of internet tough guys. The team I follow was victorious last night so you can keep your collection of ribbons for yourself...wouldn't want you to break up your perfect set. I was just unaware that the State decided to not give out trophies as it had in the past. Was simply asking if anyone knew what was behind the decision to change something that had been in place for as long as I can remember.

I believe the state replaced the trophies for the 9-16 place finishers with a banner, so there can be recognition that way, but is a bit of a cheaper option. Personally, if the state is going to do trophies or banners for those finishers, I think I'd rather have the banner as it can be made much more visible than the trophy.

Maybe they have finally realized that the STATE playoffs should be the final 8. First 2 rounds they can call regionals. In Minnesota whole damn state makes sectionals. It's three rounds unless your one of top 2 seeds and get a bye. Winner of sectionals goes to state which is final 8. Only those 8 teams get a trophy. Iowa gives much nicer trophies though :)

Glad that the "Boys from Boone" have synced the trophies awarded to what the other team sports are doing.

Now if they can just do it with the banners. Right now for football the banner has just become a giant participation ribbon. The banners need to get cut back to 8 as well,

IOU, you started this thread with an attitude and that is what you got in return.

no horse in the race but I agree... I don't have a problem with them not giving trophies to the 16th place team.... the 16th place team? are you kidding me?

I did races and stuff as a young kid and never ever won a damn one... I don't even know if I ever finished in the top 20. But I do know it would have been weird showing off trophies and having someone be like "oh, what did you finish?"

reply "16th."

not everyone needs a trophy. because that takes some of the speciality of getting a trophy away. man, we are becoming SOFT. And I'm not even that old. but we are so freaking soft anymore. And I'm not even talking about this with that... just in general.

I know I would be so proud to go back to my high school and see our banner hanging there for going 2-7 and making the playoffs. Probably would start figuring out how to break into the school and tear the damn thing down.

Agree it seems the state is preferring banners to trophies. Don't care either way, both display the accomplishment.

I disagree with any negativity towards the "16th place ribbon" or "if you're not first you're last" mentality. Bunch of tough guy talk. There is nothing wrong with a school being proud of making the playoffs (round of 16). While people from some schools like Heelan, Harlan, etc. don't see that as much of an accomplishment, people from other less traditional schools can have some pride in it. You don't need to scorn them and hold your nose up. Believe it or not, you can have a successful season without winning the Championship.

Agreed, and that's why I don't have an issue with the state giving out banners to the teams that qualify for the playoffs or reach the round of 16. My alma mater (1A when I was in school, currently 8-man) proudly displayed the qualifier banner after reaching the playoffs for the first time in over two decades, even though they got crushed in the first round (they followed it up with a quarterfinal appearance last year and another playoff berth this year).

That said, I definitely don't think the 9-16 teams only getting a banner is a problem. There should be a line for trophies drawn somewhere, and the quarterfinals is a good place for it, IMO.

The 32nd place ribbon where you go 2-7 or 1-8 or heck any losing record would be an issue.

I just think it sends the wrong message. They have always done it and now they are stopping it (while raising admission prices). It just sends the wrong message to people I think. Where is all that extra money going that they gaining from these so called "extra 1st round" games?

I mean the state doesn't even pay for the "playoff footballs" that the schools are supposed to use. The state recommends that they use these balls for the playoffs, and they send the school the bill for them? Also the state gets the gate $$ from all the playoff games. That is a load of crap, I say if a school makes the playoffs, they get to keep the gate money. A little more incentive to make the playoffs, get some coin in your pocket.

I also read where now if Cedar Falls wants to use the Dome for a home game (during the playoffs) they have to pay for it themselves? The state will not pay for it, its a state playoff game and they are going to have the host school pay for it? Seems a little odd, beings they used to pay for the games in the past. Why all of sudden cutting that out and making the school district pay for it.

Seems weird a lot of money coming in, but now they are cutting back on a lot of things.

By all means, the schools and kids should be proud of what they accomplished... I just feel strongly that they need a trophy or ribbon for it. And yes, you can have a successful season without winning a title and many teams do. You should always take pride in the work that you've done...

even if you aren't publicly recognized for it.

This isn't rocket science. Sync the banners across all sports. Be it 8 16 or 32.

You have programs which consistently win a couple playoff games in basketball, soccer, and/or baseball and never get anything while their football counterpart gets banners to hang on the wall for a sub .500 record and no playoff wins.

Syncing trophies is a start. Finish the job BOB.

Tough guy? Not me...I am 4' 2" and weigh 46 lbs. As for the state making the change maybe somebody realized we are raising our kids to be a bunch of PU$$IE$ and thought "hey we should really let these little $HIT$ know that life is not about entitlement. They have to earn something to get something".

Then again maybe not.

Travel/lodging reimbursements, police reimbursements, officials payments, awards (trophies/banners/autograph balls/etc.) all come out of that gate. And, each host school gets a percentage of the gate, or a flat rate (whichever is higher).
