Nick Phillips is almost recovered from his injury and has announced that he will have the opportunity to play D1 football next year.

"Nick Phillips always dreamed of playing Division I football, and in those dreams Phillips saw himself wearing black and gold.

Phillips will get a chance to live out his dream next year — only with a little twist.

A two-time all-state pick at Regina, Phillips will be a walk-on at Iowa State next season.

“It just felt like a good fit for me and it’s been my dream to play Division I football since I don’t know when,” Phillips said. “Growing up I always wanted to play for the Hawkeyes, it’s a little different going down to Ames, but I think it’s going to be a good fit for me.”

Phillips missed the final six games of his senior season with a toe injury.

He rushed for 204 yards and three touchdowns in the first half against Class 3A Cedar Rapids Xavier before sustaining the injury that required surgery and ended his prep career.

Phillips just recently returned to full activity following the surgery and should be ready to return to action this summer.

“It was a long process,” Phillips said. “I definitely had some setbacks, but right now I’ve started sprinting and it should be back to normal within a month.”
