Get a shot clock!!!
Seat belt has been removed, but now we need to have at least a 40 second shot clock if not 35.
I am sick of repeatedly watching teams melt the clock doing nothing. I watched Pleasant Valley pass the ball for 3:12 minutes in a quarter before taking a shot. I watched North Scott last year have a 6 point lead going into the 4th quarter and stood in the corners passing the ball around with no intention of driving until Stewart or Seales was in a position to drive 1 on 1. Tonight I saw CR Jeff go into the 4th quarter with a 35-30 lead and stand around holding the ball until Dav North came out to guard them. Then they proceeded to kill about 2:30 of the clock in one possession just passing it around until North finally got a TO.

If I wanted to watch someone hold a basketball for several minutes and not do anything I would look for the guy who wasn't picked to play 5 on 5 at the YMCA and has to stand on the sideline watching everyone else.

I would say 4a/3a should get a shot clock because in 1a/2a trying to hold on to the ball is actually counter productive as 80% of the time as it ends in a turnover. But that would cut out inter class games.

Get better on defense. Take chances and if you fail, go score on the other end. You can easily make a stall-ball strategy backfire. Your team just needs to do something about it rather than sit back and complain.

Fouling is also a fun way to crap on a stall ball strategy. Just sub guys in, foul and let them get all of their points at the free throw line. One way or the other something will give.

As for the shot clock...don't really care either way. I just know it's a logistical issue for most schools.

Ahhhh, change of heart from last season max?? Glad you jumped on the pro-shot clock train! I still believe this would help the game in Iowa. Another thing I would love changed would be the game being played with 2 16-minute halves rather than the standard 4 8-minute halves! Yes, it'd cost money, and someone would have to be trained how to run it thoroughly for each game, but only for the better. It can be done over time! An advantage for the kids who are looking to play ball beyond high school is that their game can translate well to the college game!

I've always hated seeing a team try to stall when they're only up a few buckets for an extended amount of time. For example, if I'm a player.... I'd rather you beat me by 20, because you earned a bucket near the end of a shot clock each possession rather than you win by 6, because you held the ball and ran the weave for the final 5 minutes of the game. I believe this is a great topic of discussion, and hopefully the state can move forward in making some changes!

Honestly, while I'd love a shot clock, I'm getting much, much closer to thinking Iowa needs to allow holiday tourneys. Between going and watching my son's practices and, while I'm there, reading tweets giving updates from out of state tourneys, I have no idea why Iowa doesn't allow them. Don't have them count towards district seeding, but let teams go and play in a couple of two day tourneys and get a couple of games per day in. Heck, even go to the AAU/summer league layout of 20 minute halves/w running clock.

I'm jumping on the shot clock wagon also, after watching everybody this year try to slow down the game as soon as they play a strong team, in order to try to keep the score close. Also, it seems like there is a lot of pre- holiday inter-state action between Iowa- Nebraska, Iowa- Illinois, Iowa- Wisconsin and Iowa- Minnesota. Since the kids are practicing anyway, it might be nice to see some holiday tourney games, even though it is a ridiculously busy time for a lot of families.

The NICL actually has a 5-day "dead period" over Winter Break when practice is not allowed. There are a lot of 3- and 4-sport athletes at small schools who are rarely "off", not to mention the coaches who coach multiple sports. I found it to be good to step away for a few days without feeling like we were falling behind competitively. I think it revitalized the athletes as well.

I think many if not most conferences have a 5-7 day dead week over holidays mthawkeyes.

I am not in favor of shot clock or holiday tournaments. I also was in favor of the seat belt rule.

Definitely like the idea of the shot clock. My alma mater decided to slow things down a few years back against a much-more talented Keota team and we still lost 32-25. We scored eight points in the first half and I believe we went into half trailing by 3. 11-8 halftime scores and 32-25 final scores are not fun games to watch and they certainly aren't fun to play in.

No action or rhythm of the game going, you've got the opposing team telling you how scared you are for four quarters, egging you on trying to get you to go away from your game plan that your coach drew up. Winning would've eased the pain a little bit but I am thankful that was the only time we played a game like that in high school.

Why because the Boone boy's are the Board of Control. Not their idea ( which would be a rare thing anyway ) or used by another state , they are not doing it. Because they are the Board of Control and are in control ! Eight minute quarters is so yesterday and so little league.

Finally another NICL guy on here. Yes my son loved the break because he really hasn't had one since the break between baseball and football. Love that rule.

With regards to the holiday games, the break time slows down momentum....I have seen teams come out of break and lose when before break they were playing great....a lot of that is on the coaches and how they use the practices during the break and more on how they run their practices...not sure there is a great answer to this...don't think you should take away from time with family either...here's an idea start season Dec 1 and games on Jan 2 and tourney late April, may fball until mid Nov...yea track is in April...no real good answer...also Add a shot clock!!! teams slowing it down....zzzzzzzz...you know its all about us fans.....Add the shot clock!!!

If you want a shot clock, are you willing to pay more taxes for pay for the extra person? Don't say, "Oh, it is not much money..,..blah, blah..." Are you personally willing to pay more taxes? Athletic departments lose money. Lots of money. Boys Basketball and football lose slightly less money. Adding officials costs money and the money must come from somewhere. Are YOU willing to pay for it?

Am I willing to take a financial stake in making the game better? You bet I am. I will always vote in favor of raising taxes for our schools whether it be for athletic or academic reasons. It sounds like you wouldn't. Unfortunately a lot of others share that same attitude, which is why the cost would become a sticking point for seeing a shot clock implemented.

Maybe only offer sports the schools can afford?

I get the cost of the actual clocks, but where is the extra person coming from? Our school only pays the refs and the official scorekeeper. The scoreboard and clock operators are volunteers.
