Thoughts for next year:
From what I've seen it will be Mount Vernon and North Fayette Valley as the early title favorites for next year as they both return quite a bit.

Thoughts?

I just hope people forget about SL again. In 5 years 61 and 5. 2 state title 1 runner up and never a #1 ranking during season. SL will be back soon enough.

Most of SL starters are Seniors, correct? And I would agree with you that Spirit Lake should have been ranked #1 all year as Albia had no business being ranked 1.

Most of SL starters last year were SRs. It's a well run program. Not saying they will win it, but only 5 loses in 5 yrs. Don't count them out.

I think it will also depend on what they do with 4A, my guess would be that they go with top 48 teams, but there has been a little talk of only the top 40, and also whether or not they leave an opening for the new Iowa City school for the next year.

Mt. Vernon will lose 5 of their top 6 receivers including Herrmann who was one a hell of a player. The returning top receiver was a RB. I would assume this means they lose most of their defensive backfield as well (Herrmann also led them in tackles and 2nd in picks.) Adams and Cochrane returning are huge but losing 183 receptions and most of the yards can be tough to replace. I watched their JV team and they were not strong by no means. Not saying they will not be very good but they are losing some very good talent that will be tough to replace.

They are also on the cusp of 3A as well.
