averages 10.8 yards per pass attempt and 10.9 yards every time he touches the ball (11 yards per carry) for a total of 782 yards. Is he a candidate for captain of the all-state team? Or has he not faced a defense that would bring those numbers down? Ames and Ankeny seem to be decent teams. But his numbers thus far are impressive.

Kramme is a very good player, but at the position he plays (QB), everyone takes a back seat to Ryan Boyle of DCHS.

I'm an empiricist though. As of now (though this could change) Kramme has better statistics. A possibility is that Boyle is at 1st team QB and Kramme is first team at DB.

I can see that happening, DSMan, it's been done before when deserving players need to be recognized. And that would be a legit designation since Kramme playes both ways.

If he can continue to carry his team to victories over stiffer competition (namely SE Polk and Valley), then we could discuss a legitimate shot at the captain spot. Until then, he's beaten up on 2 average teams and 1 poor team.

Barring an injury, nobody's unseating Boyle. His numbers aren't mind-blowing so far, but you know it's there. Once they faced a team that was legitimately expected to challenge them (Waukee), Dowling turned him loose, and we all saw the result of that. The best players don't always necessarily put up the best numbers.

Don't forgot Kramme is playing four quarters and picks up the majority of his yards on BIG plays (30+ yards). Several in fact are over 50 yards. Boyle is not playing full games b/c Dowling is steam-rolling everyone.

Most statisticians don't keep tabs of stats by quarter. It would be interesting though to compare Kramme vs Boyle stats in the first two quarters.

The original question was addressing qualifications of a team captain for the all-state team. Though it was couched as based on individual statistics, I would argue the qualifications for a team captain goes beyond those and it's about carrying the team. So let's talk about the teams.

Per Quick stats:

Roster: Dowling - 86 with 95% are juniors and seniors. Centennial- 60 with 76% junior and seniors

Average upper classman weight - (not specific to starters or lineman) Dowling 197 pounds, (granted this is spread across 82 players and waters down the stats), Centennial, 191 pounds, across 46 players
Defensive and Offensive personnel: As someone noted ealier and due to the above, Centennial has a lot of players who play a full game (not just the QB). The physical and mental focus that is required to do this sucessfully is significant.

Both athletes are extremely talented, however it is what is accomplished with the available depth and breadth of personnel that matters. A 3-0 record for Centennial is not the same as a 3-0 record for Dowling.

It also needs to be said that analysis of the average of the first two quarter stats by athlete is somewhat short sighted, just ask Iowa. It's what happens in the fourth quarter, just ask ISU.

Cheers

Wow, way to early to be crowning All-State captains.

If you're going to hand out All-State captain titles, may as well go Tillo and Larsen who throw 40x a game.

On the subject of schedule, how does Centennial get away playing such a weak one? No ranked teams until Valley in week #8? Best stop thinking stats and how to prepare themselves for the play-offs.

Dowling played/plays: #1 3A Xavier (2nd best team in state), #2 Waukee, #5 Johnston, #8 Valley, #10 SC-East.

I don't evaluate talent by raw yards gained. Plenty of athletes have a lot of yards only because they are given the ball forty times a game. I evaluate instead by the rate. Larsen actually has a good yards per attempt #, while Tillo's isn't that good. Why I found Kramme impressive is that he averages 10.8 yards per pass attempt, which is pretty high. He also seems to be a threat as a runner averaging eleven yards a carry. The running statistic is pretty impressive since that includes sacks and what not. The way I see Kramme is the QB equivalent of CKM for Ames last year - a darkhorse player who put up good not great numbers as a junior and then puts up video game stats sr year.

Its not like its the old CIML American

It might be time to evaluate a certain part of this post again.

Objectively, is Ryan Boyle still the hands-down All-State QB?
Sub-par numbers for a future division 1 QB if you ask me.

Not saying the All-State QB has to be Isaiah Kramme, but does it have to be Ryan Boyle if he keeps completing 50% of his passes?

Usually the player who gets first team of the all-state teams, especially the Register, is based off of reputation not that season's performance. I don't expect it to be any different this year

Zmac:
I'm not defending or promoting Boyle as I'm not a Dowling fan, but in general I'd be wary about "numbers"
as criteria in picking All-State players. Dowling's going to rout most teams they play so his numbers aren't
going to be overly impressive simply because he's not getting as many snaps....leaving games early plus
continuous clock situations.
