Is 3A a little more open than assumed?

They may have lost to two good 4A teams but I didn't expect Heelan to lose to East and didn't expect Assumption to lose so badly to Bettendorf. What do you think?

Huh? I see them going 0 - 2 to start off. And Washington isn't a gimme. And Fairfield is going to much improved with Bauman getting better.

So I am predicting 5 - 4

Yep, they will start 0-2 (going against 2 really good 4A...errr 1 4A and 1 3A). In the district, I don't see them being tested. Washington lost nearly all their skills from last year, have a couple of players out for potentially the season (one of which was a stud Line). Fairfield may be improved (from their 4-6 record), but not enough.

D5
Assumption 4A 2nd Rd
Washington 3A Runner up
Fairfiled 3A First Round 4-5
CCA 4-5
Keokuk 4-5
Fort Madison 2-7
Mt.Pleasant 0-9
---------------
Compared to D4:
Xavier 4A Runner-up
Solon 3A Semis
Maq 3A Second Rd
DeWitt 3A First Round
Marion 3A First Round
West Dub 3A First Round
Dub Wah 4A did not make playoffs

JMO.

I say 7-2.

I am pretty sure their QB is back along with 3 or 4 other good receivers and backs along with a few defensive guys that contributed heavily....

Boy that would suck....come down to 3A and go 6 - 3 or 5 - 4?

That's exactly what Heelan did in their first year in 3A (2006, when they went 6-3). They rarely lost three regular season games as a 4A team, but the stars aligned just right, and Heelan's first year in 3A happened to coincide with one of their youngest teams in anyone's memory. They struggled early on, losing at Harlan, LeMars, and at home to Spencer. Those struggles did prompt many on the 3A board at the time to pile on, saying that Heelan "wasn't ready" for the "smashmouth physicality" of 3A football (even though Heelan had been a highly successful 4A program). Such unbelievably dumb statements ended up not holding water for long, and the rest was history

2006 was a young team that played a lot of juniors and sophomores (Wegher's class), and they began to get it going after starting out 1-3. No one wanted to play them by the end of the regular season.

Assumption and Xavier may have similar paths this year, perhaps for similar reasons. But I would expect all three private schools to regularly be in the hunt for the 3A title year after year, as long as they're in 3A.
