DM Register has Waukee is at 6, NS at 7, Centennial at 4 and CR Wash at 2. But its still too early to tell who is a contender and who is a pretender.

Bettendorf will move up to number 2 over the course of the year. They are just getting better and will be in a showdown with CRW in the playoffs. Maybe North Scott and Bettendorf will still be #2 and #3 when they meet in October.

Dowling v Bett or Dowling v CRW in the championship game. I pick Dowling over CRW.

I addressed this on another thread, max. I think it looks more like this...

WDM Dowling

- - - - -

Bettendorf
CR Washington

- - - - - North Scott / Johnston / Marion Linn-Mar

Ank Centennial
SC East
Waukee

- - - - - Ottumwa / Dub Senior / CB Lewis Central

Everyone else

I have to agree with Loco60
WD Dowling over CR Washington in the finals.

CR Washington is very talented, if Lombardi was the Coach and not James, I wouldn't give Washington much chance to get to the Semifinals. But Paul James is back.

I know. I don't feel the same. I feel CR Wash and Bett have a significant advantage over Linn Mar and Linn Mar a slight advantage over North Scott.

I would say Dowling has the advantage over Bettendorf by a slight margin and Bett over CR Wash by a slight margin.

Bett beat Assumption 41-6
CR Xavier beat Assumption 30-6
Dowling beat CR Xavier 24-2

That is all I can go off of at this point. Xavier obviously showed they have a solid defense as usual, but like everyone else they struggled to put points on the board against Dowling. However, Xavier put up more yards than Waukee and Urbandale against Dowling. Boyle running and passing beat Waukee by himself. Xavier forced it to be an all around effort. Urbandale was spread around, but mainly because it was a blow out. Xavier gave up the least amount of points, gained the most yards, and allowed the least yards.

Comparing stats from the Assumption games for Xavier and Bett...

Xavier gave up roughly 110 yards(70 passing and about 40 rushing) while playing 20 guys on defense. They had 290 rushing and 55 passing on Assumption. Assumption turned it over 5 times to Xavier 1. Starting QB Tim Doyle didn't play.

Bettendorf gave up roughly 200 yards(65 passing and about 135 rushing) while playing 25 guy on defense. They had 220 rushing and 120 passing on Assumption. Assumption turned it over 3 to Bettendorf 0.

I think you and I are in agreement, max. I don't think any of those teams on the line between the second and third tier are necessarily better or worse than those above or below them. They just haven't really been proven yet. Same goes for that next group on the line between tier three and everyone else.

It's all subjective right now. Obviously, we'll know more after Friday night and more the week after that. But the picture is getting clearer.

I'm anxious to see the Lewis Central vs Dowling results next week. Simmons gets quite a bit of pub and respect in the media down there. Will be interesting how he reacts to playing the best team in 4A.

Tony Lombardi was a hot topic for a lot of reasons. That said, if he were coaching this team, the one that he spent years recruiting to Wash to play with his son at qb, they would walk through the east and give Dowling a run.

Here are my rankings for 4A at this point of the season:

1. Dowling Catholic 3-0
2. Ankeny Centennial 3-0
3. Linn-Mar 3-0
4. Waukee 2-1
5. Ottumwa 3-0
6. Sioux City East 3-0
7. North Scott 3-0
8. Cedar Rapids Washington 3-0
9. Bettendorf 3-0
10. Lewis Central 3-0
