With another year under their belts, the Iowa Prep AAU programs are working hard to continue making a name for themselves in the state and around the midwest. We caught up with their coach, Tim Schuring, and talked to him about his teams, recruiting, the players, and more!
How do you feel about your team overall heading into the spring/summer?
We have a super bunch on young men. At this point, their work ethic, commitment and willingness to buy into the process has been outstanding.
What are the strengths of this team?
With 5 guys taller than 6'5" we are pretty long group. Its also been advantageous to have Tristan Bohr and Camry Moore with us as returners off last year's squad. They played up with our 17U's as sophomores a year ago.
What areas need to continue to be developed?
Attention to detail. It's essential that we are efficient with practice time and use each possession of every game as opportunities to improve.
What are the keys for the team having a successful run on the AAU circuit?
Every year, our success is measured by improvement and overall development. We will consider it a successful off-season for these guys if they can lock into overall development. If they advance their skill sets enough to prepare them for the next level, then the season will be considered successful.
How does this team compare with the other in-state teams in this age group?
I believe we can compete with most teams we play. In order for this to happen, we must have a sound mental approach and be sound fundamentally.
What tournaments is this team looking forward to the most?
The KC Hardwood Classic in Kansas City, KS is always a great way to end the NCAA Live period in July. How we play there, gives us a true measure of how much progress each player has made from the start of the season to its end.
Who has stepped up early as leaders on this team?
Because they are returners from the 2014 17U's Camry Moore from Waverly- Shell Rock and Tristan Bohr from Crestwood are the natural leaders for this team. Others have potential to fill leadership roles as the season progresses.
What players on the team are being the most recruited?
Tristan Bohr, 6'4", G/F from Cresco and 6'9" C, Micah Martin from City High are probably the most sought after player at this point. Camry Moore, 6'0" guard from Waverly- Shell Rock is also getting his share of interest. A large majority of our athletes are in the beginning stages of the recruitment process with several schools.
Who are some of overlooked athletes on the roster?
I believe several of our guys are under the radar. For most of them, it's the first season they have competed on the AAU circuit.
