harlan use to be a dominate powerhouse in wresting, and then it faded in the early 70,s. i wrestled at harlan from 6th grade till my sophmore year, hurt my knee... i can remember we had 7 or 8 kids in most of the weight class,s, except for 2 or 3 top heavier weights.in the 60,s, harlan high a wrestling coach named mcneil i believe his name was, and he started the building of a powerhouse, and its started in the grade schools....he actually coached at the grade school practices, beside high shool too...harlan wrestled with the big schools in iowa, and place like in the top 5 at the state wrestling meets...i can also remember fort dodge was very good ....then the coaching changes, and the decline began. harlans dominace is just a memory today...i believe harlan placed too little importance in getting top coaches, and that is the reason for the decline. oh, coach mcneil left for his home town to coach, i think it was cedar falls....or cedar rapids washington if i remember right....the coach they got today, just average . . the current sports administrator there now said the current coach is doing great...i quess to him, great is being average
