Wouldn’t surprise me if it’s intended to help him get the Republican nomination. They know he won’t win the general election, but they might be able to motivate his base enough to push him over the top for the party nomination.

I don’t believe it personally. It’s obviously better than the alternative, but there’s too much stench and he turns off independents too much now in a national election
I would tend to agree, also don’t underestimate the motivation of the vast deep state cadre who can NOT afford to have a second Trump term……with no constraints of reelection.
