Game Needed

Wrong state to look in, Iowa makes all of the schedules, and no Iowa team plays outside of the state because of it.

Sad....would much rather see Dowling, Centennial or Valley play Harrisonville rather than Sioux City west or council bluffs al. Sad. Just sad. Iowa high school athletes held hostage by IHSAA.

Does anyone know when that rule went into effect? Iowa schools used to play out-of-state schools years ago.

I'm not saying those teams aren't making progress. Or can't. But for the sake of this conversation....they have a LOOONG way to go. I would rather see a 21-17 loss than a 63-0 blowout. Neither side gets anything out of those games. West has some nice kids. They deserve to play in competitive games too.

That's a good question. I'm fairly old and decrepit at this point, but when I was in high school in southeast Iowa in the early 80s we played Clark County (Kahoka) Missouri multiple times - they were practically a rival (seems like they were usually our first game of the season). My senior year in 1981 our conference had collapsed, so we had to go independent and find our own games, which included a really long road trip to Brookfield Missouri. Thank goodness we won, or the trip back would have been even worse.

(Of course, scheduling/travel issues like that were what torpedoed a lot of football conferences and brought about district play/state scheduling in the first place. Although I had to laugh this season, as one of the schools that complained the most about travel and helped tear up our conference ended up in a football district this year with absolutely horrendous road trips. Ha!)

2017 will be either the 4th our 6th year. I believe it's been 2 or 3 scheduling cycles. I'm not as big of a critic of the IAHSSA (or whatever it is) on here as some, but this is ridiculous--if teams are fine with the state picking in-state opponents for their non-district, so be it. However, teams should be given the freedom to seek out-of-state opponents if they wish.
