Future of Playoffs

Word is the state now is looking at going back to 24 or even 32 qualifiers for the playoffs again. I like the current system better than the old. Either make it hard to make the playoffs or let everyone play in the postseason. And can we please stop just handing out trophies and banners to football. The dome is state, not the 30% of the teams in the state that make playoffs.

Only thing that needs fixed is RPI calculation. Otherwise keep it the same. More teams waters it down. For the most part extra games wouldn’t be good games. Make teams earn it and feel like they achieved something.

I’d like to see a game or two not count towards the RPI to encourage rivalry games or bigger matchups that otherwise don’t make sense now.

Right now, it's 37.5-37.5-25.

At 40-40-20, the 1A qualifiers are the same.

If you move it all the way to 50-30-20, the only qualifier change is that S-K is the last team in and North Linn is the first team out.

It’s not the weight of the three factors as much as it is inequality in the non-district schedule...which is weighed the same.

A win over a 7-2 Xavier is worth as much as a win over a 7-2 Lone Tree.

I think it’s both. Your record should count more than your opponents record. Maybe 45/35/20 then a small multiplier for playing an opponent in a different class. I don’t know for sure what it should be, but your point about non-district definitely hits home especially if teams aren’t given who they ask for. But until it’s a transparent process we’ll never know.

32 teams is a joke.

Never liked it and the schedule was horrific. Learning that they man in charge had no idea that Iowa was the only state with a similar schedule gives a pretty good clue that they aren’t in touch in Boone with anything more than their paycheck.

Only complaint with it is SOS being worth too much and playing up classes not helping your SOS, fix that and the system is close to perfect imo, but there will always be someone with a problem.

This concept that teams "up a class" are automatically better or harder to beat -- and conversely, teams "down a class" are automatically worse or easier to beat -- doesn't sit well with me.

Should we give 2A Nevada bonus points for simply playing Perry, South Tama, and North Polk -- teams that went a combined 3-24 -- just because those schools happen to be in 3A?

If you're going to dole out extra credit, the team in the higher class should have to be better than 3-6.

As Mepo alluded to...Weighting needs slightly adjusted if they are sticking with it. Yes no system is perfect but you still have to reward winning when geography controls districts vs the change of opponents W-L% year to year. I know we could play "What If" all day but somehow lets say L-M was a district game for Mepo this year and Mepo missed out like SK did... that would have been a major controversy if Mepo had to stay home after seeing how deserving they were of being in playoffs last night.

The state does need to figure out some sort of multiplier in my opinion. A school in rural Iowa has a disadvantage compared to schools close to metropolitan areas that are the same class size.

I think down_south is referring to Van Meter. They get them from Waukee and other schools from the Des Moines area due to open enrollment.

A parent in the community told me open enrollment has been closed since the start of last school year, so no open enrollment last year nor this year nor in the foreseeable future. Oh, except they said for Kindergarten...so I guess they could be getting kids that will help 11-13 years from now. But facts usually mean nothing on these boards...so I expect this to get lost in rumor and innuendo very soon.:D

Just an FYI from a person who has had these battles from a private school perspective.
The next angle is ‘oh, so you are trying to cap your enrollment so you don’t move up a class?’
Keep winning like you are and it gets even more interesting.

In Moore's current 3A - A Ranking Perry is ranked 211 of 223 A through 3A schools. The only school deserving a bonus point for scheduling Perry should be an 8 man team that goes at them 8 vs 11.

Just let the District Champs in, how's that

Better yet cut the playoff field back to 8 and then back to 4 teams in like it use to be. While your at it, let the State decide which 4 teams make the playoffs know matter what their RPI ranking is, will that do?

I think it should just be a poll at the end of the year. Just like college football used to be.

My nephew was a All State Swimmer at Cedar Falls. DNH didn't have a swim team so he swam at Cedar Falls. He still attended School at DNH

DNH does not benefit from Cedar Falls, their is alot of open land between the two Cities. Maybe their is some transferring between the two schools, but not like you think . In the past it was Cedar Falls that got the transfers

But how many teams? You are almost indicating that you are not much of a fan of the RPI, that's just what I am reading

No, just a poll to decide the champion, no need for games. Lol

Not to mention something I heard once about a pot and kettle.

The good news is a school close to you was able to make an actual poster that said ‘From first grade to first place’ showing the players that had been there since first grade. The coach made sure it was posted so it was on tv during his state championship interview. It didn’t stop people then either.

Side note, do you have similar breakdowns for the past several years?

In the end you still have to put 11 guys on the field. Anybody can beat anybody on any given night

Sure open enrollment helps some schools, but there's also an advantage of people who move there because of the smaller school. You're getting a lot more parents who are involved and will pour a lot of effort (and money) into making sure their kids have opportunity. Also, the chance to go in and compete against better competition from grade school on up without having to budget for travel/hotels/etc. if you want to enter a weekend tournament.
