Hi everybody-- It's that time of year again. Many big games tonight. Will there be any upsets? I'll try to collect some scores, but I hope everyone else can report on their favorite teams or games in your area. Remember, this isn't just about the top teams or powers. The teams I follow have never won a state football title. It's a great time of the year and let's also salute the kids who work their butts off for the love of the game.

Early game. West Delaware 56- 20 over Dubuque Wahlert as three Wahlert passes intercepted in the first 15 minutes by three different Hawks. Caleb Kerley four TDs for Hawks, including 97-yard kickoff return. Sophomore Nick Bandy caught pass with five seconds to go in the first half for the first Wahlert TD. Gavin Soppe for a Hawk 3rd quarter score. Dan McDermott two TDs for the Eagles. West Delaware ties school record for 1st downs- 30, as the veteran Hawks dominated inexperienced Wahlert. 533 total yards also set school record for the Hawks. Defense held Eagles to 24 yards rushing. Marion, which beat West Delaware last year, is up next for the Hawks.

Western Dubuque 45, Clinton 7 Wow.

So EastIowa the season at Wahlert many thought was coming? At least there is talent in the under classes.

Halftime DBQ Rams 7 Linn_Mar = 0

Friend texts that West DBQ is beating Clinton by 2 touchdowns at half

Makelovenotwar---Clinton was 4A last year, so not total pushover. Wahlert projected to possibly win two or three, maybe four, games at the most this year as schedule is waaay too tough--West Delaware, Xavier, Assumption, Marion, Western Dubuque, etc. 3A is really difficult this year. In the west, 3A Soux City Heelan was ahead of 4A Sioux City East 38-0, and Heelan isn't rated in 3A, yet.. However, tiny Rock Island Alleman did play tough against Assumption tonight in the Quad Cities. And North Scott lost by only 7 to power Iowa City West, so look out for them. Western Dubuque is my pick for the surprise team in 3A- they are loaded with athletes, and draw from the state's largest school district, geographically.

EasternIowa: Oh, I agree with you very much regarding Wahlert. A down, down year and a brutal schedule makes for a long year. Can't figure out if they try and get the killer out of conference games of if it is a gift from Boone. Makes some sense from Boone's point to have the power 3A teams play each other so there is no question regarding playoffs. Just Wahlerts not a power 3A team.

Western DBQ was rumored to be good for a long time. Kind of the worst kept secret in Eastern Iowa. They may well make final 4 and again cause the debate about BEDS data and fairness. Like the parochial powers, there is no answer.

Reactions: obfuscating
Thanks for comments. Some games were so early that there were only one or two games to talk about. Also I noticed some partial scores posted as finals. That Council Bluffs Lewis Central win over Sergeant Bluff Luten must have been interesting. Both were ranked by some in their pre-season polls. Lewis Central's QB apparently is the real deal.

obfuscating....top to bottom I would not have a huge problem with that. Realize that we would end up with a very none symmetric set of divisions in terms of numbers.

WD actually won 56-20 not 28-7 FYI that was the halftime score

You still have to factor coaching, tradition and great geography. You'd have to go to ten classes before the same old powerhouses would be spread out a little. I can look back a couple of decades and many of the same schools (albeit sometimes different names or consolidations) were strong then, and are strong now.
