As a matter of fact, everyone who fails to file federal taxes is subject to federal prosecution. The IRS has a compliance department, and if their investigation warrants it, they will turn everything over to the DOJ.

When the Government has a strong case, the Government may offer the defendant a plea deal to avoid trial and perhaps reduce his exposure to a more lengthy sentence. A defendant may only plead guilty if they actually committed the crime and admits to doing so in open court before the judge. The judge has to approve it.. So yes it’s a short trial.
About 300-400 people a year go to federal prison for falsifying their ATF pistol application.
