Who has SBL overrated? BCMoore? DSM Register? CR Rapids Gazette? Iowa Radio Poll? I can't find it. Are you saying SBL is overrated in the District standings? I think they actually determine those by game results.

Happy to have you ride down to the game with me where for the 2nd straight year SBL plays Carroll while apparently underrated Heelan stays home. As of today, the window that you said would close after last year is still open - and I suspect it will consistently be open as long as Coach Smith is at SBL. No prediction from me on the game, my alma mater Carroll Tigers look strong this year. . . but I know they will have a battle on their hands with a gritty SBL team.

Bransfield also left game on Friday with ankle injury. Don't know his status. If he can't play, then that is a problem for Norwalk...

No way Norwalk loses to Webster city
So has anyone heard an update on Bransfield? Both #1 and #2 QBs knocked out of the game last week. Bransfield looked pretty "gimpy" coming off the field. He's their second leading rusher along with outstanding passing. So.......him not being 100 could lead to significant difficulties. Also did not see Gardner much in last game, which is their leading rusher. Not sure sick/injured?

Xavier- Assumption could be a closer-than-anticipated game, but Xavier wins a close one. Assumption has come on strong in the last half of the season.

Where did you read Heelan is underrated?? SBL hasn't looked like a playoff caliber team the last half of the season but luckily for them they got off to a better start than Heelan and got their 2nd straight "program defining" win early to squeak into the playoffs. Let me remind you that Carroll and SBL have 3 combined wins ever against Heelan, which have only came in the last 2 years while Heelan was going through coaching changes and inexperience.. So enjoy that open window while it last.

I wondered about this one when the pairings came out. I'm also torn about the WSR/WD match-up. WSR seems to be playing decent ball since being blown out by Xavier, but they are Jeckle and Hyde sometimes. WD always seems to score in bunches, has definitely had WSR' s number in recent years, but don't appear to have the firepower they have had in the past.

Heelan stays home this year, but I doubt any of the three teams they lost to would want to have anything to do with them now.

The notion that SBL is overrated has merit. They are 7-2, but could easily be 5-4 or even 4-5. They barely beat Heelan at a point in the season when Heelan was playing about as poorly on offense as they had in years. They were quite fortunate in narrow wins against both Humboldt and Spirit Lake, where they needed a very questionable holding penalty at the end to negate what almost certainly would have been the winning TD for Spirit Lake. They got owned by a (meh) Spencer team. Heelan did, incidentally, handle all three of those teams comfortably.

Got it. Overrated because they won games. Makes sense. LOL You should lobby the IHSAA to remove won-loss records from the playoff criteria so we can get the truly deserving teams into the playoffs. Enjoy your movie Friday night.

You really aren't very smart, are you?

Ever heard of the idea that a team may not be as good as their record? Maybe that's what is meant by "overrated"? Didn't say that they shouldn't be in the playoffs based on the won-loss record.

You should be happy; I did pick Carroll to win.

hmm, Spencer did give Heelan a tough game, usually do....but manhandled might be a stretch.... I don't think scoring one TD is manhandling/dominating anyone. How can you beat a team by 20 when you only score 10?

because we're sad we have to watch it:( for heavens sake the games were played on the field and we lost fair and square. Congrats to the teams that qualified and let's move on.... and yes I love the crusaders.

All I have heard this year is how Heelan underachieved this season. Combination of poor coaching and poor attitudes of supposed stars who had experience. Sounds like Heelan got what they deserved and so did SBL.

Not sure what you're replying to here.

They most certainly did underachieve this season, especially early on. But in the last five games, they did turn it up offensively, apparently by simplifying things and getting back to basics. It was an eerily similar scenario to 2006 (the last time they missed the playoffs), when a very young team, chock full of juniors & sophomores, started out 1-3. But the last five games of that year, they won going away. The young guys (including one sophomore B. Wegher at RB) got better, and it was widely thought that if they could have extended their season, they would have made some serious noise. Same as this year.

Now as '06 became '07 and '08, Heelan went to win 26 of their next 28 games. Will there be some sort of repeat? Very possible.

Nobody is saying Heelan should be in the playoffs and if they would have made it in somehow I'm sure people would be saying they're overrated too. SBL is in because they won.. fair and square.. but you cant help to notice how close some SBL games were at the end of the season against teams Heelan beat handily.
Ill take Carroll.. 35-14
