First Round Playoff Talk

to be honest I did my own playoff match-ups and really missed it! Does anyone know what goes into the match-ups? I was not able to watch the broadcast perhaps they explained it on the show.

Did they seed all the district winner and runner ups then do the typical 1 vs 8?

Not sure what the thinking is. Teams from the same town/city should be playing each other in the first rd. Dowling/Valley...West/City High...Bettendorf/North Scott...Prairie/Washington, etc. That used to be the case.

Three of those matchups would have district champions playing each other. In the first round. Meaning the state would be ensuring winners of multiple districts would be guaranteed to be one-and-done, while your Iowa City first round game guarantees a second-place finisher would move on to the quarterfinals.

The IHSAA appears to place district champions at the top of the heap when it comes to playoffs, whether they finish 5-0 or 3-2 in their district; the champion is the champion, and gets to play a team that did not win their district in the first round. I think that seems fair; maybe not perfect, as the champion of a weak district gets the same consideration as a team that went undefeated in a tough district, but for first round games, I think that's okay. You gotta win to move on.

I love the path for Wash. The North Scott district was by far the least talented in the field, and they put those two put in the same quad.

Bett is the favorite in the other quad, but this one is a grinder compared to the Wash quad. ICW is extremely athletic with the the best offensive player in the east and has the ability to score on anyone.
Waterloo West and Prairie both have dynamic offenses. Whoever scores 50 will win that one. And with those offenses, either one has the ability to pull a big upset in the quarters.
