So.....3 of the 4 quarter final games are district rematches.......really?

Yeah, not sure that's really a problem. Not to mention, if the district champions Storm Lake and West Delaware (plus 8-1 Creston) had taken care of business at home Friday, you wouldn't have three district rematches.

Hard to complain about rematches in the second round when it's due to the lower-seeded team getting wins on the road in the first round.

Realize this is always a possibility, was more of a complaint about lack of diversity of strength between districts. I know that probably at least 25 percent of the time the game goes the other way as the first meeting. Can be interesting I guess.

Let's look at this week's rematches:

Glenwood at Carroll - Carroll won the first meeting by 9, 21-12. That was 8 weeks ago. This could be a very interesting rematch.

Waverly-Shell Rock at Xavier - Xavier won by shutout 42-0 four weeks ago. It's the only game the Go-Hawks allowed more than 14 points. Hard to see WSR improving by over six touchdowns, but weird things can happen.

Boone at Webster City - Webster City won this one by just a touchdown, 21-14, and only 2 weeks ago. Could be a toss-up.

The other interesting fact was that both at-large teams made it through.

It looks like Glenwood is playing really good football right now, which makes the Carroll rematch interesting because, well, maybe Glenwood is better than they were two months ago. You would think a 7-2 at-large team from a district where the top two had one loss between them might be a strong contender, and Glenwood is proving that.

Waverly-Shell Rock has been really tough defensively all year. They haven't given up over 14 points in any game this season (except one - guess which one), and even after West Delaware threw for 149 yards Friday, the Go-Hawks allow under 60 yards per game passing. Their offense has sputtered on and off, which answers why they lost two games where they allowed 14 points or fewer, but they had the advantage of facing a West Delaware team in the first round without their leading rusher (sophomore Caleb Kehrli, with 1132 yards and 15 touchdowns). Waverly-Shell Rock got a big boost when Kehrli had to miss the first-round game due to injury.

That one game W-SR allowed more than 14 points? Xavier, in a 42-0 shutout, where the Saints outgained the Go-Hawks 369 yards to 22. I wouldn't expect a repeat of that performance Friday, necessarily, but I can tell you Xavier's offense is running on all cylinders - nearly 400 yards and 52 points against Assumption.

If - and I'm not trying to jinx anything here, but it looks like a pretty strong possibility - if Xavier and Pella meet in the semifinal next Thursday, it should be a really good matchup. This is a much better Xavier team than the one that got shut out by Pella two years ago, so if Pella has a similar team to 2014, it should at least be competitive.

Pella isn't as good as that 2014 team. That team was so physical and punishing. The 2014 defense was really, really good. Ended up having 4 D-1 athletes on it. This year's team has sure been playing well, but they wouldn't beat that team.

But, this year's team plays the same way. Try to outphysical you. This year's team definitely has a better passing attack. But, they don't run the ball as well as last year's or 2014's team.
