EastIowaHawk what makes M. Vernon (9-11 in Wamac) a serious dark horse?

Mt. Vernon has knocked off Waverly- Shell Rock and Grinnell in their last two games. They are probably the fourth or fifth best team in their substate 4, but isn't that what a darkhorse is? They knocked a pretty decent Wahlert team out of that substate a year ago, so, by darkhorse, I mean they could possibly do it again and advance farther than people think. I don't mean a "serious" darkhorse to go to state and do damage, but perhaps a darkhorse like Marion was last year to make it to state, or come close. I think that 3A Substate 4 has five good teams in it, in this order-- Maquoketa, Marion, Wahlert, DeWitt Central and Mt. Vernon (which is the overlooked outfit). Three of them have been top ten ranked this year, although Marion's stay was brief. DeWitt Central is better than some people realize and their team may be the strongest they've had since they played for the state championship a few years ago. Like a few other substates, 4 is a minefield.

Waverly and Grinnel both have losing records this year. Not like they have been in the last few years. I thought MV was having a down year being under .500 but you might be right. If they can win 2 games in their sub state you are definitely right

Friday Night Scores. Not a lot of action tonight, but some interesting outcomes:

Des Moines North 78, Waukee 70- Waukee's second defeat in as many weeks, but sometimes late losses can be a blessing. North is a team that I think can win it all, so really a close game between two powers.
Benton Comm. 81, Clear Creek Amana 79. Really a close one.
Indianola 77, Knoxville 57
Harlan 64, Creston 62-- Another squeaker

Watched broadcast of Carroll vs SC East on longlines.com out of Sioux City. Which was a terrific broadcast with a great picture and graphics. Interesting game. Carroll much better than I thought and with new addition of 6’8 kid for tourney. Norwalk and a healthy Osky team are 3a favorites but don’t count out Carroll, they really pushed a good 4a East team.
