Looks like the IHSAA and IGHSAU are implementing a "family week" going forward. Will be the last week of July this year. No school sponsored activities can take place during this time. I think this interferes with the baseball tournament this year, but future years they will plan around this.

Pretty sure this will be the first time the weight room closes for more than a weekend in my hometown in nearly 20 years.

I'm sure the seniors will plan some workouts for the team off campus though.

I think this is a great idea. HS kids need time to be kids, life doesn't have to be sports 24/7/365.
A wise football coach from Decorah (Bill Post) once said in a Cedar Rapids Gazette article, "we don't do football camps and 7 on 7 all summer, when I get them the first week of August I want them FRESH & REFRESHED!"

I believe Hall of Famer Coach Post made a great point, don't burn your athletes out by trying to do too much.

Coaches knew about this going into last season. Its a great idea to have a dead week like this.

The clubs will love knowing there aren't any HS events scheduled and fill that "void," no doubt, and as @Gamefly said, seniors will also take over that week in some programs. I don't see this being much more than an "official" stance and a feel good effort.

I wholeheartedly support the idea of rest. For real rest, I guess individual coaches are going to have to instill that in their kids.

I think it is a good idea. I have always given that week off to my players anyway, so it doesn't impact us at all.

I'd like to think most coaches will follow this rule and encourage their players to rest that week, our football coach already does this the week before football starts.

Every athlete should have some time off between sports, even those who make deep runs in the postseason. Should happen between every season.
