The Dunkerton at Don Bosco football game has been cancelled. Dunkerton has an ongoing investigation of a student's use of an electronics device, and that student has been suspended. The majority of players on the Dunkerton team have opted to boycott in a show of solidarity. The Dunkerton coaching staff has decided, it is in the interest of safety, due to low numbers, to forfeit the game.

you are wrong. the principal made the decision to not play tonight. the student who got suspended filmed a fight and the players are not boycotting the game they just went to the school board meeting to show their support.

Keep your shirt on! All I did is relay what I got from the Waterloo Courier in a brief read through. I was relaying the info that the game was called off. It wasn't a knock on the Dunkerton kids, coaches or school board. I did say it's an on going investigation, like I read in the paper...and...the paper did say there are players participating in a walk out. I also mentioned their show of solidarity...don't get so defensive

I just read the updated article and looks like the OP was right...at least according to to available info

You are not very intelligent are you...

I assume you are the West Central jabber jaw on here...

It has been all over Social Media in the W'loo/CF area.

The players boycotted the suspension.

The kid pulled out his phone to record a fight in progress. The teachers told him to delete it and he did as told, but they decided that he was "bullying" by taping the video. The students who fought said they didn't want him to get in trouble. The players told the school board they didn't want to play unless the suspension was lifted. The school board upheld the suspension. Parents and players packed the school board meeting to the point of standing room only.

He is suspended for three days.

Detention or something of that nature seems acceptable simply because he didn't try to break up the fight and had his cell phone during school hours(Heck, maybe that is allowed nowadays). However, 3 day suspension for recording a video... I got jumped by a kid in high school and he only got a 2 day suspension, but he wore the bruised face for a good week or two.

Seems to be a big time over reach from the school. Making one delete the video then making the jump it was bullying is a big jump. Sure hope the attacker got at least 3 days.

If the reports are true, it was a pretty selfish move from the dunkerton players. Football, more so than all other sports, has a finite number of opportunities for competition. The DB seniors deserved better than that, not to mention the various halftime plans, lost revenue, etc. and for what?

You don't know how the playoffs work do you? The State get the majority of the money from playoff admission money...so...yea...that is lost revenue for this season...

As a coach, personally I would not let these young men play this Friday night. If they chose to abandon their team mates and school for something this trivial then they do not deserve to play in next game. Their selfish act accomplished nothing to hurt Dunkerton's administration or change the outcome of this students suspension. How noble of them them to sit out a game that they would probably get beat badly in, on the road. If these players were willing to give up a game when you only get 9 they must not care too much about football so again, they should not play in their last game. I would be willing to bet that DB did have activities planned for final home game and yes it will cost them a lot in revenue and some things can not be done at home playoff games due to state regulations.

That was more in response to the DB seniors part so thanks for jumping down my throat. It's not like they are 0-8 and the Dunkerton game was their last chance to play on that field. Also, I do know a little bit about the playoffs, do you? Every host school gets at least $700 from the state. I'm sure DB is real concerned about that loss of revenue from that game. They might not be able to afford new jerseys next year.

You sir or madam are an ass! $700? Really?! The revenue generated for a game at home is more than that! Bottom line, and I have tried to take the high road here until now, is...it was a bad deal handed to Don Bosco, and Dunkerton looks bad because of it. Now...we can call a duck a duck and leave it at that...or, you can continue to think you know about what was missed out on at Bosco, both revenue wise and by the seniors who won't get their senior night!

You may know something about playoffs, but you don't know how much every game means to those players and to have one snatched away on a Friday morning is a big deal. And yes, the revenue loss is much more than 700, and yes, those several thousand they lost will mean no new jerseys, or maybe they won't get that new sled, or something else they had planned on. Point is, it was a low move on the part of the dunkerton players.

Did you both not thoroughly read what I said ? Did you skip over the word 'AT LEAST' on accident? Or intentionally because you wanted to both point out that they bring in more than that? $700 is the starting number. Point is they are getting two additional home games; quit complaining. They won't get their senior night consisting of what? Being introduced at halftime with their mom and dad? Cool. This is 8-man, not 4A...everyone knows everyone and everything about everyone.

Are you freaking kidding me? They're high school kids; it's not fair to expect them to be thinking about things like taking away an opposing team's home gate. They stood behind their teammate in what they felt was an unfair situation, which I think is good. Whether they were right or wrong, they at least had their teammate's back.

Hell, from Don Bosco's perspective, it's a week where they can heal up and not risk getting anyone else hurt in a game that was going to be a blowout, anyway. That'll be a lot more beneficial than getting the Senior Night festivities in. I guarantee that if you talk to the players, they'd much rather be healed up and ready to make another run for a state title than to have gotten to stand on the track with their parents for a couple minutes.

I will "guarantee" you, given the choice between starters playing 2 quarters and jv playing 2 quarters, or getting a forfeit, they would've chosen the former 10/10 times.

And let's not act as if high school aged kids are stupid, they knew the potential ramifications of their decision.

Where did I say they were stupid?

Expecting high school kids to fully think through ALL of the potential ramifications is unrealistic. I know nobody I went to school with ever thought about how much money our school made from gate/concessions, so why should these kids be expected to think of the gate/concessions for an opposing school?

And it's not like it would be hard to turn this around and say that if they had not stuck up for their teammate and played the game, that they would have been selfish. In that hypothetical, they would have been putting their enjoyment ahead of sticking up for a teammate they felt was dealt a crap hand.

But whatever, you're clearly not going to stop whining about not getting to play what would have been nothing more than a game for Don Bosco to pad stats a little while killing time before the playoffs. So by all means, continue.

Totally on Dunkerton's side here. The school stepped out of their boundary line by handing a student, who complied to the wishes of the school by deleting the video, a suspension. I'm sure that the players felt like it is their right as teammates to stand behind another. I'm sure they don't care about DB or their plans. Don't really blame them either.

I bet they thought a lot about DB when making the decision. No way they boycott if it fell on either of the previous weeks where they were favorites to win. Is boycotting a football game, that is in place for the players benefits more than anyone else, really the best option? Do the same Dunkerton kids boycott a basketball game (where they have been very competitive) that could cost them a conference title?

Cardinal, I was pertaining to the Dunkerton boys not caring about the financial aspect from DB's point of view. But you're right, the fact that it would have probably been a blowout only made the decision easier.

That's fair. It seems like a bad situation all around to me. Given the facts I've heard the punishment was not justified, but I also disagree with the boycotting, I think there had to be a better solution to the problem.
