Duds, lying to cops….felony or misdemeanor?


It depends on the lie and the circumstances around it.

However, in a situation like the one you linked, the 5th amendment protects you from self-incrimination. It's still POSSIBLE to charge someone for a verbal lie in the immediacy of the crime but it's VERY unlikely and even less likely to pass judiciary scrutiny. A written statement or taped verbal statement not immediately after the incident, after having access or an opportunity to consult with a lawyer, is more likely to bring a charge.

Very few people tell us the truth especially in a circumstance like this one. They try to minimize their role/responsibility by human nature.
