Of course I'm kinda shooting in the dark, but what the heck.....here we go:

DCG 21 Carlisle 20 -- Expect a close game. Carlisle will have two of the better RB's that DCG will see this year. DCG is very stingy on defense, but was not a high scoring offense last year. Injuries decimated Carlisle last year so I expect better results this year. Carlisle's senior class has been very solid over the years. Great season opening game. Would like to see this one.

Chariton 35 Centerville 21 -- Chariton should have a good offense this year. Should be a solid team. Hockenson will be a load to cover at TE. Centerville has been down for the last few years.

Saydel 42 Clarke, Osceola 28 -- Saydel should enjoy this one as wins have been tough to come by for them. I'm rooting for the Eagles to win big!

Newton 42 Knoxville 21 -- Newton should have a very good offense. Knoxville will probably struggle at the start of the year with the new offense and defense that the new coach is implementing. Newton looks like a potentially dangerous team to me, if the D can make improvement.

Norwalk 28 Creston 21 -- Both are solid teams. Norwalk could have a very good season this year. Obviously have a talented young QB. Will be interesting to see how this game turns out. Creston is always a tough team and is tough to win in Creston. I don't really know what all Creston is bringing back though. They had a solid season last year.

Oskaloosa 35 Winterset 21 -- Osky has some serious rebuilding to do, but do have lots of talent back. They had a great year last year and really put up the points. Don't really know what Winterset has back this year, but struggled some last year.

Pella 35 Washington 14 -- This date had probably been circled on the Pella team's calendar since the playoff loss last year. Pella lost a few starters, but has most of the team intact. Washington has a very good QB back, but lost a lot of key players. Washington also has a new coach, so that can take some time to gel as well. I'm thinking Pella is going to get some payback here.

What the heck, I'll take a shot as well.

Carlisle 28 DCG 14. Carlisle beat Indianola 21-10 in their scrimmage game on Friday night.(yes, I know it's just a scrimmage game but it is still 3A vs. 4A). Carlisle has almost everybody back from a playoff team while DCG loses their QB, top 3 rushers, top WR, punter, kicker, and 8 of their 11 top tacklers. Disclaimer- I am from Carlisle and very much a "homer".

Chariton 35 Centerville 21. Chariton has some really good players but not across the board. This week they don't have to be.

Saydel 21 Clarke 20. The Eagles get their one win for the year.

Newton 28 Knoxville 14. Tyler Wood is surrounded by better players than Tanner Duncan.

Norwalk 28 Creston 21. The people I know in Norwalk say they can't run the ball and probably won't even try. Athletes win this one on the road.

Osky 24 Winterset 7. Yawn. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Pella 24 Washington 21. One program returns core, the other graduated theirs.

Carlisle v DCG: I have a suspicion that Carlisle will be very hungry for success this year. High expectations last years faded quickly with the many injuries, yet they still made some noise. DCG is well-coached, and that school seems to be enjoying a lot of success across the board. They will be tough again. I think Carlisle wins this won in a surprise squeaker, 21-20.

Chariton v Centerville: Chariton wins in a closer-than expected battle, 30-27.

Saydel v Clarke: Saydel wins 14-7.

Newton v Knoxville: Newton will be pretty decent. They have some good skills players and I believe they are beginning to expect to win again. I do not think Knoxville feels the same way about their team. Newton wins 35-0.

Norwalk v Creston: Don't know much about Creston, but they are historically pretty solid. What we DO know about Norwalk is that they have higher expectations this year, based primarily on their passing ability. However, their rush offense and rush defense have been lacking recently. How well they will be able to execute in those two areas might temper the enthusiasm their passing offense might generate, especially in the face of inclement weather? On a rainy night, I pick Creston to win a minor upset. 21-17.

Osky v Winterset: This game will be close. Osky will be pretty good, but Landgrebe stirred their drink last year, big time. They will miss his play-making ability more than they know. Winterset always plays hard, and I am inclined to think they will be better this year, too. I'll take Winterset 18-14.

Pella v Washington: If weather is clear and footing good, I think Pella's speed makes the difference. Washington will hope to feature QB Sebelius on run/pass options, but it will be hard to be really consistent their new offense in opener, and Pella's experience and speed on defense will provide more consistent play, most likely. Another huge factor will be Pella's offense. If they can expand their passing offense mix like they think they will, good luck trying to stop them. They have great speed in the backfield and several very good athletes in receiving corp.
