Obviously with this being 1st game of the year this is a complete shot in the dark, but looking at last year's contests and changes to rosters here goes ...

District game of the week
Grundy Center 28 at Belle Plaine 21

Clayton Ridge 7 at WV 35
Colfax-Mingo 35 at BCLUW 6
Jesup 0 at Hudson 35
Maquoketa Valley 8 at East Buchanan 34
North Mahaska 0 at North Tama 56
Columbus 0 at GMG 28

Thoughts? Roughly 7 hours and counting till kick-off! Can't wait! Good luck all.

I don't disagree with any of your picks but I do wonder how quickly Grundy will adjust to a new coach, and I struggle to see GMG beat anyone by 4 touchdowns, I would say that Cardinal and Martensdale St Marys and Cardinal are similar teams which both teams lost to by similar margins.

Very good point on the Grundy! And Belle Plain whooped up on Lynnville-Sully who historically have been a strong program. That may bounce the favor to BP? I am anxious to see how this one plays out.

Yeah, it felt really weird saying that, however, they did win 32 - 0 last year over this team. Columbus Junction pretty much got ran over by everyone last year. I totally could be wrong though.

Ok, so week one in review let's see how I did. (FYI Apologize, I jumped the gun on the GMG game as a few of you pointed out.)

Clayton Ridge 7 at WV 35 (WV +28): actual 13 - 52(WV +39)
Colfax-Mingo 35 at BCLUW 6 (CM +29): actual 62 - 32 (CM +30)
Jesup 0 at Hudson 35 (H +35): actual 7 - 5 (J +2) BIG miss!
Maquoketa Valley 8 at East Buchanan 34 (EB +26): actual 38 - 44 (EB +6)
North Mahaska 0 at North Tama 56 (NT +56): actual 0 - 61 (NT +61)
actual Grundy Center 29 at Belle Plaine 12 (GC +17)

Big news, obviously was Hudson falling, although I did hear they had 3 starting lineman out and Fulcher out with knee issue (still would have expected them to beat Jesup though!

EB / MV: closer than I would have thought, not sure whether EB D took a step back or MV O is much improved.

GC won by more than I would have originally thought!

Would love to hear comments from fans at the games on any/all of these games!

WV/CR commentary:
WV looked very fast! This contest was 46-7 at half and the only reason CR scored was because WV bobbled a snap in their end zone. Halfway through Q2, they started taking out the starting skill positions. WV scored 3 RU TDs, 2 Rec TDs, 2 pick 6s (1 for 99 yards, 1 for 40+yds), and a punt return TD plus 2 fumble recoveries. Almost all of second half was primarily backups. 5 different individuals scored.

CR's RB was very quick, and their QB could run effectively - if anything WV gave up more ground yards than I expected - but the bulk of that was in second half. I do think CR will definitely win some games this year. Anxious to see how they look against EB this next week.

Also, FYI CR JV did beat WV JV pretty handily, which, for the record, WV only has 3 SO out :-( But a large FR class.

Wapsie will roll most class A teams as their skill guys pretty much all returned and still kept a decent line. Clayton Ridge was huge up front and did get some good rushing yards but Wapsie beat them with speed. Only real shocker I think was the Hudson loss and I know they were missing some key starters but I thought they would have the depth to overcome even with what they lost from last season. Grundy I think is the dark horse much like North Tama was last season and wouldn't be surprised to see them challenge for the district as they finish with Wapsie. EB / MV I see went 3 OTs and from what I heard MV is a much better team than in the past with better athletes as I see they threw the ball 40 times. They got kids out that were not out in the past, state track kids. EB I think is very young as they graduated a ton of seniors last year so that score doesn't surprise me. North Tama is solid, very solid and have a lot of guys back from last year. The game of the week wont be this week it will be week 3 when Wapsie travels to North Tama, hows that for a district opener two top 10 teams.
