Actually, I saw them run this event at one of their college meets. Two turn stagger, hurdles on the tangents only for a total of 8 in the race. Once the athletes come off the second turn they break for the pole like the 400 does. Then it's another lap. The final hurdle is about 3 strides from the finish line like the 300 Intermediate race most states run.
Yes, it would have been interesting but I can see how it could be pretty chaotic after the athletes break for pole with potential for accidents with aggressive athletes. The winner would have been crowned national record holder but the guy that wipes out risks his season. It's a toss-up that may not be worth the risk or the hassle that would have come from parents toward the university/Association/Union if their kid had gotten hurt.
