Devontae Lane

Some people think he is the most talented player on the West squad. He certainly is the best defensive player on the team. I would think Iowa will offer soon, too.

First time i saw him was 6th grade playing for the Barnstormers in Chicago. Everybody was telling me to get ready to watch McCaffery and he was awesome but Lane was the man that whole week. Both are great and both have different strengths. Hope Iowa takes him too.

I have been higher on Lane than I have been on anyone else from ICW, but I am surprised to see ISU as his first major offer. I would have expected Drake, UNI, etc...

I just dont see him being a high major guy. He is just 6'0, and shot 3-10 from the three point line for West last year. Does Hoiberg see him playing the point in college? Because he surely isnt a shooting guard.

Lane is definitely a high major point guard. He has the ability to defend the other teams guard and to break pressure and get your team into its offensive sets at high major level. Kid will be great in college. Whoever gets him will be lucky.

I've seen Devontae play several times and he will be a big-time guard (I believe) in college. Extraordinarily quick and a lock-down defender. He's a special player, and only a soph. He was the difference in a lot of West's close games.

I'm very curious to see what Iowa does. One would strongly assume that no other college coach in the country has seen him more than Fran with HS and AAU. Lane just goes off in AAU games and that I assume prompted the offer from Iowa State.

Iowa quickly offered Weiskamp after ISU offered but has not with Lane. Should be interesting to follow if Hoiberg can get his actual first scholarship in-state recruit signed.

The problem is Conner McCaffery is already committed to Iowa and both are really good players at the same position. Conner is the better passer and outside shooter where as DeVontae is the better defender and natural scorer. Do you take them both as a one two punch?

They do really work well together. I think Fran and Hoiberg have made it pretty clear that the heart and soul of their teams will likely not come from in-state kids. Not saying there is anything wrong with that, just saying the level of talent year after year would make that hard to compete at the Big 10 level. Then again, UNI is doing fantastic with it. I am sure the Panther fans love to see Iowa/Iowa State pass up all the elite kids in-state.

I'm saying as a 1-2 punch at the PG position not both as starters. But you only have so many Schollys and only need so many PG's. I'm sure he will have lots of great opportunities with the way he has been playing.

He will have a lot of chances. Always makes me wonder when a DI lets an athlete in city get out of there.

If I recall, wasnt Devontae academically ineligible first semester his freshman year? Any word on how he is doing as a student?

I think academics are an issue for Lane and Iowa will not offer until they think he has a chance to qualify. That might hurt them in this case but I know a couple kids who play with Lane and that is what they have heard.
