District play is now upon us. Good opening week of games slated.

Knoxville 28 @ Fairfield 27: I'm on the Panther bandwagon on this one. Picking the upset at Fairfield. Knoxville has some good athletes and new coach. Great win over a not so good Centerville team last week, but they finally got the losing streak monkey off their backs. Fairfield crushed by a very good Albia team last week.

Norwalk 28 @ Carlisle 35: Carlisle couldn't finish off DCG in week one, but they pile drived B-F last week. Norwalk had a good win last week, but I think the physical play of Carlisle will win this one. Carlisle's running game will trump Norwalk's passing game.

Saydel 14 @ Chariton 42: Chariton continues a nice early season run. I expect the Chargers to put up some points and make it a long night for the Eagles.

Pella 49 @ Oskaloosa 14: Will be a long night for the Indians. They don't have the fire power they had last year and Pella is a step up from where they were last year. Once again, Pella's team speed will be the difference. Pella will roll and roll big.

Knoxville 14 @ Fairfield 24:
Knoxville not yet ready to make this jump.

Norwalk 31 @ Carlisle 37: Slugfest, with the team with the better defense finally winning.

Saydel 7 @ Chariton 33: Three wins in a row for Chariton, but not a rigorous trail, either. Chariton has enjoyed a nice schedule to learn and develop.

Pella 42 @ Oskaloosa 7: Pella offense too tough to catch, and defense gaining experience. Osky is making progress, but it won't show in this match-up.

Norse, I'm probably drinking the black and gold Panther kool aid a bit prematurely, but I just have a strange feeling that they will do well against Fairfield. Then again, they also may put the ball on the carpet 6 times. That is the danger of the wing-T offense that they are utilizing. K'ville has Carlisle and Pella next, I think, so they really could use the win this week.

Does anybody know how DCG knocked off Carlisle? After watching Pella throttle DCG, I'm surprised that they took down Carlisle as I expect a great battle between Carlisle and Pella. Carlisle has those two great runners that are very hard to stop, as Bond-Farrar found out last week. I'm not knocking DCG, as they are a very solid team as well and will win lots of games this year, just curious.

DCG got a punt-block return for a td and another punt which went straight up in the air in which a lineman returned for a td when no Carlisle player would down it. That...and Carlisle's QB didn't play in the 4th quarter (hurt) as well as one of the good rb's. Carlisle was probably the better team--but the better team doesn't always win!

This is a hard game to pick. I do believe the Fairfield young QB gives them another dimension that might be harder to defend, but I do not believe Fairfield is super-able to rush or defend exceptionally well. That being said, I just don't know about Knoxville....yet. Their new coach, Eric Kramar, will be a fabulous influence for the boys in that town/program. And I do think they will be improved, but more later than sooner? But who knows.

Regarding Carlisle and DC-G, I have heard that Carlisle gave up points on special team goofs, but out-yardaged and out executed DC-G between the hash marks. Unfortunately, the only winner is he who has the most points at the end of the day. Both will be pretty good teams by the end of the year.

Sad news out of Knoxville. Apparently, one of the Panther players committed suicide on Wednesday night. My heart and prayers go out for the team and the community. Will be playing with a heavy heart, if they do play. That is really hard to hear.

To those of you wondering about the DCG-Carlisle game...........it was pretty much as you describe it but here are a few more details. First downs were 17-6 but so were the penalties. Carlisle controlled the whole game but were up by two TD's with 30 seconds before half. DCG blocked a punt in the heavy rain and returned it for a TD. In the fourth quarter Carlisle had to use a back-up punter due to injury. He shanked a ten yard punt which Carlisle failed to down, DCG picked it up and ran in for another TD. Carlisle then lost their starting QB and struggled to move the ball. DCG wins in OT.

Jarjar,

Don't sell Carlisle's backup QB short. They didn't have problems moving the ball against BF.

Carlisle's backup is also well experienced since he got the call last year after the starting QB went down in game 2 for the rest of the season.

The better team did win that night. DCG. Other stats mean nothing if you get beat by the only stat that matters...the score.

Fmclone,

I wasn't at the game last night but it appears the season starting QB was back but as a receiver. He had 1 reception (for a TD) and 1 punt. The "back up" QB rushed for a TD and threw for another.

Might be a situation like Sheel at Union a few years ago. Leave the underclassman backup as QB and play the injury prone senior elsewhere. The kid is 2-0 in games he has started this year.

I've seen both Hagadorn the SR starter and Pierce the JR backup play quite a bit and was surprised Pierce didn't start from the get go. Hagadorn is quicker and very shifty i.e. runs the veer well but Pierce is also a solid runner and brings a much stronger and more accurate arm. I think Hagadorn will have a very successful season just not at QB.

I'm glad that the injured senior is back. He is a pretty talented kid and I'm sure will do well at WR. He just needs to be on the field somewhere. Carlisle doesn' t need the injuries that they had last year. Looks like it was a good game last night with Norwalk. Much lower scoring then I would have thought. Both D's must have played well.

Fmclone,

A high level of injuries are nothing new to the Carlisle program and has been a problem long before last year. This QB situation is interesting to me because maybe it marks a change in philosophy which might actually address the injury issue.

Couldn't agree more...it is good to see a player that can contribute to the program return even if it means they are playing in a different position.

When Carlisle faces Pella in a couple weeks I hope the question "what can we do to minimize the possibility of injury?" is a part of their game plan. Pella is always one of the most physical, aggressive teams you will find and that must be taken into consideration when preparing to play them.
