CR Wash now open

What's up with this. I read the paper, but there has to be more than what was said in the Gazette. This should be a pretty good job.

Sanchez is quoted as saying Wash wanted some commitments from him that he was not willing to make.

My guess is that Sanchez will take the Williamsburg High School english job that is open and coach with Schlabaugh if he has any desire to coach. I think the daily 90-mile round trip commute from Williamsburg to CR Wash would become fatiguing when you are a young father of four kids. Would like to see Sanchez get back to the college level (Grad assistant w/ Keno at Drake and Grand View assistant).

Printy transferred on him (after scoring 8 points in a 29-point blowout loss at the hands of Iowa City West in the substate game) and he would have been the leading returning scorer at 12.2 ppg. Wash loses Arrington (9.5 ppg), Moore (8.1 ppg), and Kramer (6.7 ppg). Arrington and Moore had 4 and 2 points respectively in the substate game.

Two juniors: Willis (6.3 ppg) and Williams (4.8 ppg), and freshman: Strait (4.3 ppg) is all that returns and that won't get it done against the teams in that league.

I don't think the Wash basketball job is a good job. I think Wash is a football school and the run with Oglesby and Washpun (two once in 10-15 years type of players) was an anomaly.

Basketball at three of the four public high schools in Cedar Rapids is down: Jefferson (1-21 this year), Prairie (9-14), and Wash (beat 11-11 Dubq Sr. and 1-21 Burlington team to get to the substate game).

Kennedy is the only hope right now. Kennedy has fortunately steered clear of IC West in the postseason.

The last state title from a CR public school was 1998, when Prairie was in Class 3A, and then Kennedy in 1984.

super_tecmo_bowl...are you kidding? Wash is one of the best jobs in the state. There are athletes walking those halls that would make any prospective coach salivate. Strait and Wills may be the top back court in the conference behind Bohannon-Printy at LM and McCaffery-Lane at West. Laveechie Williams is a beast. Dont forget Dallas Hobbs did not play last year due to a football injury. Noah Dawson 6'4 post and Trevor Thulin come up from the JV squad and then their soph team was maybe the most talented team in the conference. 6'6 Donovan Beard, 6'4 O'Rien Vance, Ian Thomas at the guard, Malik Williams was the best shooter at the soph level last year. I say Wash is the favorite to win their Division again in spite of losing Printy.

I also think that CR Wash is a great job. Not only do they traditionally have a bevy of talent to choose from, it is also a very good school, academically, according to all the Wash grads I have come to know over the years. Schools go up and down with regards to talent, but I have no doubt that they will make a resurgence. I really though they were going to be an upper-tier MVC basketball team next year, until the Printy transfer to LM.

I would agree the Wash job is a great job. I don't think it is a 90 mile round trip drive but I could be wrong. Even so, it is not a bad drive and I doubt if that was a factor. Wash will be very competitive next year.

Google maps Williamsburg, Iowa to Cedar Rapids Washington High School then. If their sophs were that great, they would have been playing varsity. Not going to argue the records at CR Wash since their last state appearance speaks for itself.

Some schools regardless of talent don't let kids play up, so they can grow as a group. I know Bettendorf tried moving up some kids, but they have discussed not doing it again. Definitely not with freshman. I'm sure other schools are the same way. Kids can be mature for there age, but most are not mentally ready for varsity for at least 1 season. You will find 5-6 freshman in 4A that are usually varsity ready as freshman, but that is not the case for the rest. The schools that struggle with participation will bring kids up just to be somewhat competitive. It tends to ruin development and confidence. Some schools as I mentioned keep kids down to grow as a group and that is when you see sophomores who average 20+PPG... I saw a few kids do that this year in the MAC alone.

I said nothing about freshman. If CRW's "great sophs" were that good, they would have been on varsity. What a player at the sophomore level does or what the team does is not an indicator of future success.

Wash will not have a winning season next year. Not after losing Printy and Arrington/Moore/Kramer.

We will see what kind of interest it draws from applicants and who they hire if CRW is such a great job.

With all due respect, this used to be a great job year in and out. Yes, Don King was an unbelievable coach, but even for awhile after Don, this was a job many coaches would love to have. Not sure why this has fallen below the radar so much, but I think this can be a good job. Lin Mar, Kennedy, and Xavier seem to be the best now in the area, but the sophs at Wash this year looked very good, and I personally think some coaches will look at this as a good opportunity to advance into a better position. Coaching in one of the best conferences will be a challenge, but I think this can be a really good job for the right coach.
