Ran across this word the other day... it's a really good word. Describes Jill's husband to a tee, and then helps define how and why he confabulates:
Confabulation is a type of memory error in which gaps in a person's memory are unconsciously filled with fabricated, misinterpreted, or distorted information. When someone confabulates, they are confusing things they have imagined with real memories. A person who is confabulating is not lying. They are not making a conscious or intentional attempt to deceive. Rather, they are confident in the truth of their memories even when confronted with contradictory evidence.
For example, houseplant joe never knew anyone named Cornpop at the local pool; he wasn't the top RB on his HS FB team (he didn't even play FB); he didn't get a full scholly to Law school (partial) nor graduate at the top of his class (9th from last); his uncle wasn't eaten by natives in New Guinea; his house was not hit by lightning and the house didn't almost burn down with his wife in it (it was a small kitchen fire)...
You see, well-meaning elderly men with poor memories ($1 to Robert Hur) that 'confabulate' stories are not aware that their memory is wrong, and they are not lying to manipulate or deceive other people.
So when HPjoe says he was:
repeatedly arrested as a Civil rights activist (never); received 3 degrees as an award-winning student (one); 'raised' in a Puerto Rican community at home (LOL); spoke w/ a friendly train conductor (who died 7 years before); or going to the Tree of Life Synagogue massacre site (phone call)... he really isn't trying to lie.
He's just the most powerful person in the world who with no idea of who he is.
