Guessing Bell and Hersom had some interesting conversations about kids, captain, etc.?

Been researching some of the all state teams, and I'm not sure how they determine which DB's made the list. Many of the DB's on these lists had little to zero interceptions. Not sure there are any other stats that can help determine this other than tackles.

????
#11 from pella, Argo, I believe. How was he not an all-stater? granted I only watched their semi and final live in the dome but holy cow that kids a player. Did he not play part of the season? sit out?

I think a lot of the time some defensive selections are given to players more for their offensive contributions. For example, Nielsen from Creston was named first-team quarterback. Rather than knocking Clayberg down to the second-team, they gave him first-team honors as a defensive back. I'm sure he played well there, but I think it's likely his first-team status was based mostly on his offensive play and not how he performed on defense.

Personally I'm not thrilled with this way of filling out the all-state team. It seems the writers aren't willing to make the tough calls between elite players at the same position, instead they honor both the players by putting one "out of position," sort of. I've seen this in the past, and it seems to be a traditional way the writers work.

I agree with this as well. Argo was all over the field during the semifinal game, and was the best defensive player out there. He was also great in the championship game.

I also want to give a shout-out to Xavier's punter Connor Foley. I know it's really difficult to give all-state recognition on special teams by just looking at the numbers, but Foley was absolutely great all season long. I think I saw him shank only a couple of punts all season, and in addition to averaging 39 yards a punt, he was an expert at pinning the opposition inside their own 10-yard-line.

If you just look at the per-punt averages, Sherman (Saydel) was at 46.4, Grell (Central-DeWitt) was at 41.7 and Wyant (Sergeant Bluff-Luton) was at 39.1, so all were higher than Foley. Foley, though, had nearly twice as many punts as any of those three (58, compared to around 30 for all three of those all-staters). Of course, the state doesn't track punts downed inside the 20 or 10 or whatever, but watching Foley all season, it would be hard to imagine anyone who would have ranked higher.

Anyway, just wanted to give him a mention. I think he deserved some all-state recognition, but I realize how difficult it is for writers from across the state to make distinctions "inside the stats," so to speak, when all they really have to go on is a punting average.

Totally agree with you Kid. You frequently see great offensive players on the defensive all-state teams just to get them on the team. This shuts out kids who play great defense. They should be rewarded. Clayberg is a great LB/DB, but he is on the all-state team because of what he did at QB. The Creston kid is a great QB, but I'm not sure how you could vote someone over Clayberg for that position. I'm sure it's because he doesn't throw as much or as well as a prototype QB, which is true. He did complete about 70% of his passes during the season, which isn't shabby either.

Also, I think Argo (#11) for Pella didn't get as much recognition due to being overshadowed by some of his teammates. Argo didn't play as a soph and only a couple of games as a junior due to injuries. He started the year well, but was a steam roller by the end of the year. He benefitted from teams having to double up on Jansen, but Argo is big, strong, and fast. I hope he goes on to play more football somewhere. His performance in the dome was amazing, especially against Xavier.

The all-state teams are a nice honor and the writers do the best they can, but they'll never nail these things 100% of the time.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I'll just say from the two games I watched that is the biggest miss by an all-state team i've ever seen. I watched those games live with about 15 other coaches and he was generally the topic of conversation when they were playing D. I was positive I would see his name on first team defense.

People need to realize that players have to be nominated by their own coach to receive this recognition. I have no insight on this kid or any of the kids mentioned, but it is possible that he wasn't nominated. Coaches sit in on these meetings and give input but writers make the decisions. If a kid isn't nominated by his own coach, you have to wonder why. Again, not saying he wasn't nominated but it is possible. Also, there are times when it's difficult to even fill three offensive and defensive all-state teams. Some coaches don't nominate anyone. You'd be amazed how many coaches simply don't take the time to do the paperwork. The defensive side is especially difficult to fill. If you have a ton of deserving RBs or WRs but not many deserving LBs or DBs, they often times find a kid that played both ways and move him to the other side of the ball so that the most deserving kids get recognized and an inferior kid doesn't get honors above his "grade." Not saying it's right or wrong, but that's the way it works. To those discussing the Argo kid, I agree he was a monster in the semis and finals. I was very impressed.

I had the opportunity to watch Pella play several times, including the playoff trail. It is my opinion that Argo stepped up big in the playoffs. He was not the same player during the regular season, which is not intended to be a slam in any way. I noticed on quikstats that he recorded the 11th highest tackle count on his own team.

The most important consideration here is that he played huge at the most important time and became a force down the stretch. Clearly he made an impression on many with his exceptional dome play.
