Since I normally do most of my posting on this board, I will list my nominations here rather than on each of the football boards. None of these teams will likely win state titles this year. But I think their coaches have done credible jobs that are worthy of recognition.

4A - Lewis Central: Titans are 7-1 their first season in 4A. They were a 4-5 team last season in 3A.

3A - Independence - This has been a very difficult place to win games (or even be competitive) for at least the past decade. The Mustangs are 5-3 this season.

2A - Anamosa - Another school that has not had a lot of football success in the past. They are 7-1 this season.

1A - Pocahontas - This school's turnaround has been mentioned on this board before: 1-8 last season, 5-3 this year.

A - Woodbury Central - Another nice turnaround story; 2-7 last season, 5-3 this season.

8 man: Lenox - Most of last season's most successful teams in this class are big winners this season as well. Lenox had a losing season (4-5) last year, and is 6-2 this season.

Your nominations ( in any class) ?

Woodbury Central doing this without their true "head coach" is nice to see and they have dealt with distractions since he was put on administrative leave. So they have been a pretty focused group it seems like.

Hmmm, probably can't award "coach of the year" to someone who has been placed on administrative leave, can we?. But yes, kudos to the athletes and interim coaches for holding things together nicely under those circumstances.

There are a lot of great coaches and staffs out there, but I think Southeast Valley deserves a mention in 2A. First year together as a new program and jumping up from Class A to 2A. They are 5-3 and have a chance to win a share of a district title this week.

Like I said there are many who are possibly deserving of a nomination here, just thought I'd give those guys a mention.

Good nomination - that is a pretty big jump from A to 2A.

Sure, hopefully it is understood by anyone reading this thread that there are numerous worthy candidates out there - this year and every year - in each class.

Prairie Valley was 6-3 in the regular season last year. It's not like they were horrible. SE Valley is a weak 2A district too. They haven't beaten a team with a winning record yet, and got throttled by MNW who will finish 6th of 7 teams in 1A district 7.

Their wins have come against
Eagle Grove 0-8
Shenandoah 2-6
WCV 1-7
Kuemper 3-5
Red Oak 3-5

Yes, I would say the Anamosa staff would be a far better COTY candidate this year.

Just saying it's still a big jump from A to 2A. Especially when the team they have is literally what the PV team would've been plus about 3 guys who actually contribute. And really IMO if MNW would've stayed healthy and at full strength they would've qualified for the playoffs from that district...they are a solid team that had injuries and other things happen that caused them to slip a little.

I get what you are saying about the jump up two classes...plus I am sure the coaching staff had to deal with all the issues that come with joining with another school- both from inside the team and without.

Class A. It might be a big IF but if Britt West Hancock beats a good Garrigan team by 10 they will finish 2nd in the district after going 0-9 last year. A 1 point win likely puts them at 4th as does a loss, but 4-5 more wins from the previous season including driving an hour and a half and playing the eventual district champs to a one point game goes far in my book.

8-Man: I have to say Central Elkader and Melcher-Dallas... Yes, both teams had winning records last season at 6-5 and 5-4. Central Elkader had a #17 schedule based on BCMoore ratings and MD had #61 out of 64 teams...

My reason for Central Elkader is simple they are 8-0 and beating teams by about 57 points per game... Common opponents in both years...
Tripoli by 8 last year and 38 this year.
Cedar Valley Christian by 34 last year and 87 this year.
Lansing Kee LOST by 22 last year and WON by 48 this year.
Midland Wyoming by 2 last year and by 56 this year.
Central City by 42 last year and 62 this year.
Springville LOST by 62 and WON by 47 this year.(Not the same Springville team, but that is 109 point turnaround nonetheless)

---------------------------------------------------------------

For Melcher Dallas the strength of schedule last season helped out more with them being 5-4 as they were the lowest ranked 5-4 team in the BCMoore rankings last season.

This season they are 6-2 with 3 wins over teams with .500 or better records and losses came to 8-0 and 6-2 teams and they beat no team with a winning record last season.

Ranked #50 in BCMoore last year and #20 this year.

Class A: Bedford or Woodbury Central... These two have had easily the biggest turnarounds in the class.

Bedford was 1-8 with its only win being over 1-8 Woodward Academy. They now stand 7-1 though against an easier schedule it is still a heck of a turnaround. #54 last year and #13 this year.

Woodbury Central was 2-7 last year having played the #5 hardest schedule, but not competing with the likes of Lawton Bronson, West Lyon, or other high ranked teams. Without a 40-0 shutout in the last game of the season they were scoring 16 and allowing 32... This year they are scoring 29 and allowing 4 and they have 4 shutouts and 3 more near shutouts. #25 last year and #8 this year.

Class 1A:

Pocahontas is a solid choice...

I would go Bellevue who was 3-6 against a decent schedule is now 6-2 against a slightly better schedule.

The other thoughts were Pella Christian and North Cedar.

Class 2A:

Anamosa is the best choice, but 2A holds multiple solid turnarounds in large part to moving down a class...

South Tama has had a heck of a turnaround as well going from 3-6(ranked below 1-8 Independence) to 6-2 this year.

Clarinda, Clarion Goldfield, and Baxter CMB should all be not worthy as well.

Class 3A:

Independence, Carlisle, and Clear Creek Amana...

Carlisle went from 4-6 mid-pack team to 6-2 #2 in BCMoore currently.

Indy and CCA are generally bottom feeder programs and they went from both being 4-5 last year to 5-3 and 7-1 respectively.

I would lean towards CCA due to being 1 2OT loss by 3 points to a 6-2 CPU from 8-0 and they have climbed the rankings latter further than the other two teams between last year and this year.

Class 4A:

This is tough... CBLC moving up and going 7-1 is impressive, but outside of Dowling and Johnston I think they played just as tough if not tougher teams in 3A... Dowling beat them by 41 this year...
Why would I say that?
#13 3A SBL lost by 7... #15 4A SC East lost by 7...
#35 3A Harlan lost by 17... #27 4A CB Lincoln lost by 21
CB Jefferson is really bad and Des Moines North is possibly worst in 4A...
The nice win was by 3 over Johnston.

I offer up Linn Mar and Fort Dodge...
Linn Mar was 2-7 last season in what was a stacked schedule... However, they only closely played 1 maybe 2 of the good teams. They won big over 2-7 Wahlert and over 4-6 Waterloo West which I believe had injury issues for 1 or both of its star players.

Linn Mar has played an easier schedule with the 4A districts now, but 7-1 includes wins over the same mid-high tier teams they would have gotten stomped by last season.

Fort Diggity... Fort Dirty... Fort Dodge...
3-6 with wins of 0, 1, and 2 win teams... They got stomped by everyone else. This year the schedule is easier, but they have beaten or lost close games to the mid-tier teams that would have rolled them last year.

My vote is for Linn Mar, but you can make a case for any of them.

Don't even start using injuries as an excuse. Madrid has lost 5 starters on offense and 6 on defense from week 1 due to injuries at some point in the year, and at key positions, nonetheless. 4 of which are done for the season. Yet they are still playoff bound and potentially could be the #2 seed if they win and Ogden loses. All teams experience injuries to one degree or another. It's how you respond to them with the next man in that determines the amount of success you experience.

It is evident that Britt West Hancock has done a pretty good job of rebounding from an 0-9 season. Their scores would seem to indicate that they have improved throughout the season; that was indeed a valiant effort against Nashua-Plainfield. The athletes and coaches should be commended.

However in my opinion, I would not award a COTY for what is likely to be a 4-6 season at a school that is a perennial football powerhouse.
