Coach seat belts removed, effective immediately

I was a coach a time ago, and liked the "seat belt rule". You knew you couldn't get up. The problem has arose with fans like me now, and a coach would be up, yet NO technical was called on them, which would drive fans (me) nuts!! I believe it is more to make officiating easier. (prevent the association from getting 100 of calls about coaches being up and NO T was called) than making it better for the coaches to coach!!

I agree. It was a dumb rule to have in the first place. I do agree the primary motivation was probably to help officials, but I do not see that as a bad thing either.

The placement of the coaching box is really pretty stupid... takes coaches further from the opposite end of the court then where they were sitting

Actually, the 14 feet starts in the middle. Takes them from halfcourt to the end of their bench if I am understanding correctly.

Whiteshadow you are incorrect... It starts on the baseline.. go 14 feet and put ur stripe down and the go 14 more and that is your coaching box

The rule was in place because well it's Iowa and the Board of Control is in control , never forget that. If every other state does it , the Board of Control will not because they are the Board of Control and don't ever forget it. Shame playing two 16 minutes half are played in most all the other states , because that great idea is assured to never happen in Iowa.

This being said, the stand up rule is good as long as the coaches realize the game is about the players and they are not on TV , so use the rule accordingly , not for attention.

You think coaches that are on TV stand because they are on TV?

They will need to tweak the box location or size. A coach cannot sit "outside" the box at the end of the bench near the score table and then stand up to walk into the box which is about 5-10 feet away. So they must be seated in the box to stand up and use the box. That moves the coach away from the score table, so they have to yell from about 10 feet away to their scorer to know fouls, timeouts and such. They need to be able to come up near the score table to get information, and currently they can't.

Agreed. The 14 feet should start at the Scorers table and then go down the bench. This is like the seatbelt rule still with a little Coach's daycare box. It's absurd how much control the Association wants to have. Ref's don't want coaches to be the center of attention in games, yet they themselves often become the centers of attention.

If a coach has done his work during practice, he shouldn't need to stand up all the time, only occasionally to make a point, otherwise, it seems to distract players on the floor.

It make me think of the college game and the aau circuit....coaches roaming the sideline...saw a college game the other day and the coach did not even have a chair to sit in....tell me what coach does not want instruct during a game and just sit back an watch....what is the saying "those who can't coach"....I think you will also see more of the roaming early in the year will the teams are getting use to the new year, maybe new plays, maybe new coach.....most coaches wanted the rule changed so when they want to stand up they could and not worry about is this time I can be up or not...
