How
did Substate 1 do at the State tournament?
Sioux City East
Beat West Des Moines Dowling in the quarterfinals (66-54)
Lost to Bettendorf in the semifinals (63-54)
Beat Iowa City West in the consolation game (58-57)
Thoughts on Substate 1 for the 2005-2005 Season:
Over the past few years, this substate has been dominated by Sioux City
East. North was able to make it to the State tournament during the
2003-2004 season, but the Black Raiders have been the most consistent team out
of the bunch. This year will likely be no difference. Dan Bohall is
now gone from East and will need to be replaced. But with senior Roman
Gentry back, the team is going to be tough to beat. Gentry has been a hot
topic on message boards because of his decision to de-commit from Northern Iowa.
If he doesn't make a decision soon, this standout will have to worry about
recruiting all season. Despite that, the Black Raiders are still the
obvious favorite in this substate. Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln returns
a very underrated guard in
Mike Allmon. This senior nearly put up 15
points per game but the rest of the team will be very inexperienced. Lewis
Central is on the cusp of playing 3A sports but is just too big. Sioux
City West should be much improved this season and returns a very talented
athlete in Josh Collins. This point guard stayed busy this summer with
hoops and will only be better. Sioux City North has their top three
leading scorers returning from last year. That will obviously make the
team much more competitive. Also don't sleep on Council Bluffs Thomas
Jefferson. They return two of their top three leading scorers but will
need to replace senior Derek Townsend.

How
did Substate 2 do at the State tournament?
Ankeny
Lost to Linn-Mar in the quarterfinals (70-44)
Des Moines East
Lost to Iowa City West in the quarterfinals (67-46)
Thoughts on Substate 2 for the 2005-2005 Season:
When looking at all the teams in Substate 2, this is one of the most
intriguing because of the amount of good teams and talented players. Begin
with Ames. The Little Cyclones have a Division I athlete in Austen Arnaud
who has moved from point guard as a sophomore to power forward as a junior.
Where he plays is yet to be seen but that versatility is tough to guard.
The team lost a lot but look for some younger players to pick up the slack.
Ankeny made an amazing run at the end of last season and will return Nate Nygren.
This senior can put up points in a hurry and was one of the main reasons the
Hawks were playing at Vets. Boone is going to have a rough time in this
substate because they play smaller competition and then have to bump up.
But they have some talented athletes. Des Moines East was hit hard by
graduation but played extremely well during the off-season. Don't be
shocked if the Scarlets are playing in the substate final. Johnston is my
pick to make State for a number of reasons. The first is Brent Barz.
This junior will now have varsity experience and has had a great summer.
He may be among the top players in Iowa, regardless of class, and currently has
scholarship offers from four schools. Because of his size and skills, he
will give teams a fit trying to matchup with him. Newton returns Curt
Greeley but lost a load of talent around him. This senior is another
bigman who has outside skills and is tough to guard.

Waterloo West
How
did Substate 3 do at the State tournament?
Cedar Falls
Lost to Bettendorf in the quarterfinals (67-41)
Thoughts on Substate 3 for the 2005-2005 Season:
What makes this substate interesting is he fact that there are schools from
two different conferences facing off against one another. Fort Dodge,
Marshalltown, and Mason City represent the CIML while Cedar Falls, Waterloo
East, and Waterloo West represent the MVC. With five returning starters
and some solid younger talent, Cedar Falls is going to be the team to beat.
The Tigers have State tournament experience from last year as they fell to
Bettendorf in the first round. One disadvantage that Cedar Falls will have
is that their football team is expected to fight for a State title. They
are currently rated #2 in Iowa and that might end up causing most of the
standout athletes to come back to hoops late. Waterloo East will be a
tough team to beat this season. Sophomore Trice Scott is back with another
year under his belt. Marshalltown gave Cedar Falls everything they could
handle in their two matchups last year but were hit hard by graduation.
Point guard Andrew Peschong is now playing Division II basketball and he just
knew how to play. Mason City returns a solid point guard in Danny Rose but
his teammates must step up. Waterloo West has a new coach and will likely
be young. Fort Dodge returns an All State player in Mitch Eslick.
His teammates must come to play every night if the team wants to get a good seed
for the postseason.

How

Linn-Mar
Beat Ankeny in the quarterfinals (70-44)
Beat Iowa City West in the semifinals (63-57)
Lost to Bettendorf in the championship game (81-60)
Thoughts on Substate 4 for the 2005-2005 Season:
With the best player in Iowa returning in this substate, it is obviously
going to be a battle the entire way for any team to make State. That best
player, Jason Bohannon of Linn-Mar, is finally a senior. He has played in
the past two title games but this version of the Lions will have a much
different look. With both Travis Nelson and Andy Kuempel graduated,
Linn-Mar has a huge hole to fill inside. This Lion's team will do a lot
more running and gunning. Look for Bohannon and junior guard Jordan Printy
to put up a lot of shots (And that isn't a bad thing). If Cedar Rapids
Jefferson could have stayed healthy last season, they likely would have gotten
past Iowa City West in the substate final. This year's team returns a very
good front court with Bryant Kucera and Riley Larson. The big question
mark is who will man the guard core? Kennedy also brings back some
talented post players in Ben Lamaak and Ryan Keel but will need to stay healthy.
They were hit hard by the injury bug and underachieved because of that.
Clinton lost all five starters and will be very young and inexperienced.
Dubuque Hempstead returns 7-foot-1 junior David Scott and 6-foot-7 forward Nate
David. They still haven't had a chance to make State and this road appears
extremely difficult. Dubuque Senior returns point guard Taylor Blum, who
will likely put up some big numbers. The questions more center around who
will step up outside of Blum for the Rams.

Iowa City West
Beat Des Moines East in the quarterfinals (67-46)
Lost to Linn-Mar in the semifinals (63-57)
Lost to Sioux City East in the consolation game (58-57)
Thoughts on Substate 5 for the 2005-2005 Season:
This substate has the number one ranked team in the preseason but that
doesn't mean they won't have a tough time getting past these five opponents.
Iowa City West has the title of the top team heading into the 2005-2006 year and
that is without a starter from last year. Michael Walker transferred to a
prep school over the summer and will no longer be with the Trojans.
Despite his loss, this team is still ready to make an impact in the MVC.
All Stater
Ali Farokhmanesh and sophomore
Jordan Stoermer will put up a lot of points.
And with any team coached by Steve Bergman, these players will be hard nosed and
play defense. That alone is enough to beat most teams. Iowa City
High brings back the majority of their starters and sophomore Matt Gatens will
be even better. This future Iowa Hawkeye committed over the summer and
will likely average over 20 points per game. Burlington and Muscatine both
have a lot of question marks surrounding them. Can they make an impact in
the MAC with young talent? Possibly, but when they get moved to this
substate, it will be difficult for them. Two other teams that will be
inexperienced will be Prairie and Washington. Prairie brings back two
starters from last year but could have a lot of freshmen who get minutes at the
varsity level. That will pay off down the road. As for Washington,
the Warriors returning Justin Reed and Mitch Westphal. The rest of the
team will be young but loaded with talent.

How
did Substate 6 do at the State tournament?
Bettendorf
Beat Cedar Falls in the quarterfinals (67-41)
Beat Sioux City East in the semifinals (63-54)
Beat Linn-Mar in the championship game (81-60)
Thoughts on Substate 6 for the 2005-2005 Season:
When the IAHSAA pits the top two MAC teams against one another in the same
substate, it makes getting two teams to State very difficult. Last year
Bettendorf was the dominant team who ran the table in conference and eventually
won the State title. But with most of their pieces graduated, they should
be headed for a down year, right? After seeing them in the off-season,
that is obviously not the case. Their current senior class went undefeated
as sophomores and will finally get a chance to play. Also keep an eye on
junior
Charlie Schwartz. This kid is very skilled.
As for my personal favorite, Pleasant Valley has all the makings of a State
contender. The Spartans return a load of talent, led by Brian Larson,
Brett Greenwood, and Matt Ryder. This trio will win a lot of ball games
for them but they are not the only ones good for Pleasant Valley.
Davenport Central went through a coaching change in the summer and just recently
named Craig Wurdinger as the head coach. This former Wahlert coach will
make sure
L.A. Pomlee develops. Davenport North also went through a coaching change
and returns an oustanding bigman in
Nick McFarlin. North Scott brings back future Valpo guard Keaton Frye.
This senior had a nice summer after making his decision known in the spring.
All three of these teams (North Scott, North, and Central) went through coaching
changes and each brings back one extremely talented player. The question
that will decide how good they can be is who steps up around them.
Davenport West will be young this year but hoping to turn things around after
going defeated last winter.

How
did Substate 7 do at the State tournament?
No current teams qualified for State last
winter
Thoughts on Substate 7 for the 2005-2005 Season:
If there was one substate that made other coaches unhappy, it would be this
substate. With no teams having made the State tournament last year, it is
obvious that there really is not one team that sticks out as a favorite.
With a loaded substate 8, the question to ask is why does this one have so many
fewer of the power teams. Despite that, there are still going to be six
teams fighting for a State berth. The early favorite has
to be Indianola. Not only did they bring in a talented transfer, the team
also returns three double digit scorers off of last year's team. This
offensive firepower will be tough to stop in the CIML conference.
Southeast Polk lost three starters from last year but brings back two talented
juniors in Nate Snead and Blake Sandquist.
This duo will be a load to contain. Ottumwa returns one starter from last
year. Jon Rusch is that player and he is now a junior. Oskaloosa is
at a disadvantage because they play in a smaller conference and then have to
bump up for substate play. Look for junior Tyler Sash to put up some
enormous numbers. On paper, West Des Moines Valley and Des Moines Lincoln
appear to struggle this year. But with the athletes at both schools, don't
be surprise if one of them makes their way through this substate.

Thoughts on Substate 8 for the 2005-2005 Season:
This substate could easily be considered the toughest in Iowa. There
are so many teams loaded with talent that it is going to be difficult for one
team to take care of business and get to State. The early favorite is Des
Moines Hoover. The Huskies had a big summer and return some very talented
players. They are athletic, deep, and talented. The problem is they
failed to make State last year with a very good team. Will they
underachieve once again? Urbandale brings back some talented players as
well, including Ethan Freeman. This junior will be a three year starter
and has a chance to be one of the best in Iowa. Also keep an eye Jake
Jacobs and Nevin Conlon. Both are returning starters and have proven that
they can score. Des Moines Roosevelt lost Dion Curry and some standout
seniors but are loaded with young talent. Keep an eye on junior Nate
Taylor and senior Edin Suljic. West Des Moines Dowling was the only team
out of this substate to make the State tournament last year. However they
said goodbye to a great deal of seniors and will have a young inexperienced
team. Waukee returns a standout athlete in Tim Getting but will have a
tough time making the jump up to CIML competition.

and returns an oustanding bigman in
Nick McFarlin.

No current teams qualified for State last
winter

How
did Substate 8 do at the State tournament?
West Des Moines Dowling
Lost to Sioux City East in the quarterfinals (66-54)
