Totally agree. Records are deceiving. It's who you play and the circumstances of wins and losses. 4A and 3A rankings are primarily of entertainment value, and to promote discussion.

a team from Iowa for starters... not defending champ from MN. with 5 starters back and 2 kids with offers from Duke

Apple Valley is what you call a "good" loss for IC West. West will be a better team for having played them. Much better than drilling a weak team by 50 points. However, Luke may be waiting for West to have a "good win." There will be plenty of opportunities for West to get some "good wins" after the holidays. I think that in rankings, teams should have some impressive wins to be #1, not just mow over a bunch of so-so teams. And I think that you have to consider their "body of work"- in general, how strong is this team?
