Another perspective from someone on the Off Topic Board:

“I haven't read every post, but I appreciate that Sportsmom has addressed a few things. I did hear today that City has video of Ben getting punched/grabbed in his genitals. That video has been forwarded. I was told by someone directly involved that multiple times a Dowling player spit in Ben's face. Not spittle flying while yelling, but a full on spitting into his face. I was told there was some racial taunting directed in particular at City High's Tono Cornell. All throughout that game the officials were negligent in keeping things settled down, and in particular in the events that led to the Dowling player being ejected.

Beyond that there is a lot of frustration from people at City that there has been no real response. There were multiple meetings early on and the decision was made that for Ben's best interests there would be no response. That was a top down decision from the administration. A lot of people think Ben isn't being supported by the administration, that they are blocking Ben and staff from addressing the situation, and that a lot of this has been driven by a few Dowling parents. Things go viral, but there seems to have been a genesis for it. None of the folks complaining about Ben care to comment about the punch that led to the Dowling player being ejected. I have been told that Ben is being affected by this greatly, and that's a shame to see adults driving such anger at a kid. A great kid, who does amazing things. He is unfortunately learning what it's like to always have a target on your back. In case some of you didn't know, City and West play this week, and I have no doubt that there will be a lot of heat directed at Ben by West students, and by parents who cannot control themselves.

Personally I see some gray area on that play in that it took awhile to develop, and Ben came in from well off the play, and from a side angle. Whatever happened, it is being addressed, and it could have been addressed much better in private.”

I used to work with Tono Cornell’s dad before I retired. When Tono was in middle school he went to Vinton/Shellsburg … I had no idea he’d transferred to City High.

That video is, like, the entire game, plus. Care to narrow it down a little?

Both videos here. Can't see the actions that led to the Dowling player's ejection but obvious something warranted an immediate flag/ejection.

A Central Iowa prospective. I am not a Dowling dude but work and socialize with people some close-ish to the program. I have heard the Dowling prospective and watched parts of the game.

First, Dowling players were warned as part of the pregame scout to expect dirty play and taunting from City High players. They were instructed not to retaliate. I’ve heard this is the second time that a CIML team has done this. Apparently, Southeast Polk had the same warning last year for the Semi. The warning may have done more harm than good. Players were ready for a brawl and the parents were on the lookout to document.

There were questionable hits earlier, but the spark was after a very late hit by City High late in the second quarter. From then on, was less of a football game and more of a brawl. The game ended with a scuffle and the teams had to be escorted separately into the locker rooms. Police remained present to ensure separation until they were on their respective buses.

Dowling has also provided videos above and beyond the leg incident. Claims that there were racially charged comments made towards individuals on their team (Apparently the number of the offenders and timestamped videos provided to IHSAA).

Regardless of what occurred, not a good look for either team. Not sure what IHSAA will do but there is definite two incidences of deliberate acts to cause harm. One for each team and one, at least, did cause a significant injury.

That's strange. Go to 2:29:30 in the stream.
2:39.40 I believe was the leg twist.
Big hit on QB at 2:48.00 (looked like a clean hit, not a cheapshot to me)
Also a cheap shot on an o-lineman around 2:52.09

The continuum of respect in Iowa high school football goes from Tom Wilson (most respected) to Mitch Moore. Moore had the same type of stuff at Roosevelt.

I personally have no connection with either team and have never even seen either team in person. However, my father-in-law did chains for many years at another Des Moines area school, he said that the Dowling sideline had the worst sportsmanship of any team they faced, and that included the Des Moines metro schools.

Looks like City took it out on West….apparently no repercussions yet.
