Hindsight is 20/20... down by 9 would have given them a chance to win with a TD&FG vs. a tie... down by 10 or 11 is no different aka no chance to win with 2 scores.... tie at best.

I got no problem with a coach going for it, particularly with a 1st year coach in that situation.
