I thought the road might end here for Xavier. Not just losing two key leaders, but only having three days to prepare with your new players while getting ready to face the most potent offense in Class 3A.
What a terrific game tonight. Xavier jumped out 14-0 early, then made two fourth-down stops deep in their own territory, driving to a field goal after the second one to lead 17-0. West Delaware turned the tables in the third quarter, getting a running-into-the-kicker penalty and an offsides call on fourth down to help drive for one score, then immediately recovering a Xavier fumble at the 10 to make it 17-14.
Xavier got another huge field position stop and punt return to the 20, making it 24-14 going into the fourth quarter. West Delawre hit a big pass to flip the field and cut it to 24-17, but then Xavier was able to gut out a key late drive, picking up enough first downs to drain the clock inside two minutes before adding a final field goal.
Great game on both sides, tremendously physical. Lammers for WD got knocked our of the game not once, but twice, and both times came back in limping trying to will the Hawks downfield. Schulte took some nasty hits himself, and the WD defense was tough all night.
