Here is how the story has played out for three years: Dowling beats Valley in the semi's. A CR school beats Bettendorf in the semi's. Dowling crushes CR school in the finals. West side of the state cheers and says we're so much better.

Well, if Valley crushes Bettendorf, they are a lot better. If Bettendorf beats Valley then it really looks like Dowling alone is just that much better than everyone else.

How does this equate in any way to what Dowling has been able to do in the last three years? First week of the season means so many unknowns from last year, let alone 3 years ago. And what Dowling did in the last three years is much different from what Valley has done/will do this year.

This means very little when it comes to East v. West discussions. But it's good banter, I suppose.

The perennial number 2 on each side of the state, I thought this game would get some conversation going. This is going to be a fun game!

Dowling and Valley should be the two best teams in the state this year (especially with guys like Lombardi, Hummel, Hinkle etc) but week 1 should be sort of a trial balloon for both teams (they don't play until week three). Bettendorf is almost always a solid team and Ankeny has some decent players (Hawkins, Faeth, Hill).

So...this is awkward. Should we be considering a West v. West title game matchup?
I think they should consider re-seeding at the semifinals so that east goes vs. west in 4A but there is about a 1% chance of that happening. If the west or the east win both of those games, they deserve to be in the championship even if it is Valley vs. Dowling.

Well, that settled that. The second best team in the west is a lot better than the teams in the east.

Remember the only reason that the playoffs look like they do is because Cedar Falls played Iowa City West in the finals and the west side of the state pitched a fit. Either way, Dowling will play Valley for a championship, semi's or finals, doesn't matter. Teams in the west are screwed no matter what. I like it that the teams in the east get to play for being the best team in the east.

By the way, how good is SEP supposed to be this year? ICW has some big time D1 talent, but to be honest I'm not sure how good they are.

Can't really compete when the QB/C can't get the exchange right... 4 fumbles will lose you a lot of games. Bettendorf will progress throughout the season. Remember the QB played basketball all summer and that is the direction he will go for college, so football will take him some time to get back in the groove. WR Suni Lane also played basketball all summer.

I am talking strictly football here...Westside is hands down top to bottom year-in and year-out over the past 5 years superior in Football. Please seed the playoffs better and allow the best teams to play for the hardware.

Valley and Dowling are hands down better. That's as much as we can say right now. We don't have enough meaningful cross-over games to tell.

fair enough however time will tell that 7 of the top 10 will be westside teams. It may have been as many as 8 last year. It's a standing point of hard feelings in DSM and west most Friday Nights

I don't know if I agree with that. I think it's safe to say that over the last 4-6 years, Dowling and Valley have been the class of the westside. However, Dowling had a period from ~2001 to 2010 where there was only a semifinal in 2005 to speak of. Granted, the 2006 team was ranked fairly high going into the playoffs (finally beat Valley) and then lost to SC East (Tre'darius Canady argggh).

My point is, these things ebb and flow. Valley and Dowling are very good right now. I disagree that there are that many westside teams that would be better than the likes of Bett, CFalls, and Pleasant Valley. Also, we would need to see the likes of Valley, Dowling, Ankeny schools going to the Mississippi River to get a true lay of the land.

thanks for the (one opinion), take a look at the top 10. Also lets examine last season, I think ( just my bias opinion) every team in the final 4 west side would have beaten the east side. To be fair, I should have NOT said the last 8 years as that's a BS statement on my part...sorry:(
My point in all this... seed the finals and not seperate west/east, lets get the best playing the best.
