Who would you replace them with? Looking at the body of work for both Carlisle and Xavier, I think they would be top 5 teams.

You have a point. Who could you replace them with?

Xavier does have a quality win over WD. They do have losses over potentially 3 champions but were not competative in any of those 3 losses. They also have a loss against an above average 3A team and only manged to score 15 points total in those 4 losses. Not really top 5 material in my book. I think the computer loves them for a very tough SOS but one that really was over their head. Give them credit for that.

Carlisle? Here again give me a quality win? They lost to a very inconsistent (and IMO overrated) DCG. They also lost to Washington. Just because Washington lost twice to Pella bigger than Carlisle's loss to Pella does not mean Carlisle should be ranked above them. Carlisle plays tough at home and the computer it just too infatuated with that early season game where Pella only beat them 17-6. I have a real problem ranking someone top 5 solely for losing to a team by a lessor amount than everyone else without yourself beating someone of substance .

This year 3A seemed to have a lot of teams that might seem to win a big game or 2 but then turn around and lose to some less than impressive teams.

IMO maybe it should be this....move Carroll up to #3 and not worry too much about rankings for anyone below that....it didn't really matter much. Lots of teams could lay claim for the spots below number 3.

I agree Stick. I'm just not sure who I would replace them with. I think Heelan and Pella are a clear top two, then it is a jumbled up mess below them of probably 6-8 teams that could beat each other on any given day. Carroll probably is at that top of that list, but West Delaware could be there as well, when healthy. Xavier could make a case also, but that loss to Western Dubuque hurts.

The two teams that should be in the championship are there, which is a good thing.

I'll be the first to say this wasn't a dominant Xavier team, particularly compared to 2006, 2009, 2012, or last year. Their offense was really inconsistent, for one. But just going by the results on the field, why would you say this?

Yes, they were not exactly "competitive" against Dowling or Pella. But against Dowling, they held the Maroons (and Boyle) to their worst offensive performance of the season. Exactly one 4A program was able to hold Dowling to fewer points than the Saints allowed. Xavier also controlled the entire 3rd quarter that night when the score was just 14-2.

Against Regina, the Regals were the better team, but Xavier tied the game at 7 in the 4th quarter. They intercepted Cook for the first time all season, and had held Brinkman to something like 20 yards through three quarters. Regina exploded with multiple big plays late to get them two more scores, but Xavier was certainly "competitive."

The Western Dubuque loss was a bad loss for Xavier. But even as poorly as they played, one missed extra point and one missed field goal made the difference. Going 0 for 7 through the air was a terrible part of that inconsistent Saints offense that night, but I credit the WD coaching staff for coming up with the ideal defensive game plan.

There is kind of a cluster between number three and number eight or nine, but Xavier has as good a right to the top five as anybody, I think. Getting dominated by Pella ... pretty much everybody's been there this season.

I think the Top Tier teams are more superior than years past in the respective classes...

While I do understand that the Xavier/Regina game was closer than the score would indicate one thing must be remembered. This is Moore's world.....nothing matters but the 21-7 final score. I don't know who was favored to win that game in Moore's world but I'd guess the projected outcome was closer than 14 points.

BTW, if you check Moore's site he is now showing Carroll #3. Must have been some corrections or the other class games played later Friday/Saturday impacted these ratings.
