In 3A it's amazing that the computer doesn't give Chariton and Spirit Lake much respect. These two teams have some gifted players, and Spirit Lake has played some highly-regarded teams (CR Kennedy and Western Christian). I suppose the answer is lack of quality wins, but....

Chariton has some great players, but they have basically played 2A schools and lower tier 3A schools so far.

Spirit Lake hasn't done much either. Getting beat by Western Christian by 30 doesn't help.

I will say, both teams will have plenty of opportunities to move up.

In comparing the two, I would actually like Chariton if they played each other.

Spirit Lake has two tremendous players, but I am not sold on them as a team yet. They will win a lot of games with those two but will need more than that to compete with the truly top teams, as we have already seen in their two losses. We should find out soon how legit they actually are with three tougher games coming up, vs Spencer and at Lemars and Sioux City North.

I am a man who can admit when he is wrong and I may have been very wrong on Spirit Lake. That was a statement win last night and a dominant performance. They needed one of those.

Iowa football championships take a toll on early season basketball teams in Iowa. Last year Sioux Center was one of the most highly rated teams in 2a basketball. But a long football run to the finals left them with injuries that hurt them the entire year. Spirit Lake has two very good players but the rest of the team is a whole new cast of characters playing their first real varsity time. They need some time and need to get kids healthy. BC Moore can't account for lack of practice time and injuries.
