Can you enlighten us to why they are a joke? I had heard someone else say that in another class as they thought someone should have been on but wasn't, come to find out they were not nominated by their coach in the 1st place and after that was realized nothing else was said. Unless I'm wrong every single player on the class A teams were a 1st team all district player provided by each district rep. Most districts ranked each position before they sent them to the state committee so say your number 4 RB in a district couldn't jump the 3 above him for all state and so forth at every position. Just remember the 1st criteria is they need to be nominated.

I think this season there pretty poor. Ridge view who was awful had 2 players make 1st team all state. The one kid had a bunch of tackles but defensive stats other then interceptions are very inaccurate. I think comparing eye test is much better. Also offensive line was a joke to. Other then Ezra and and Taylor Fox I feel like they gave all state offensive lineman spots to a lineman who was also a good defensive lineman. Also how do teams line edco and bishop get 1 player on first team yet ridgeview 2?? It just doesn’t make sense at all

I see your concerns and yes I agree that defensive stats are deceiving as I know teams pad stats because 3 people cant make a tackle on one ball carrier they all cant get part of the tackle yet some do. So are offensive stats to a point as just because a kid has a tone of yards doesn't make him all state when they may play the whole game against others teams subs to pad the stats. I also agree that the eye test is the best way BUT you have to remember that the sports writers and coaches that help but don't vote cant watch every single kid in the state of Iowa every friday night. How it works is simple, the payers are nominated by their coach or even better by an opposing coach as that carries a lot of weight to the committee. Each district has a rep that for the most part calls coaches in that district or from teams they may play and just asks about certain players and uses such info. I think what people forget is kids you may think should be on may not have even been nominated in the first place and then blame the all state people when they should be looking at their coach. As far as the offensive lineman you talk about, that's probably the most difficult position to pick because you have no stats and that's when you really rely on what other coaches tell you about certain players, as far as Miller and Fox that you mentioned both are going to Iowa but just because of that doesn't make them all state although it helps. Also remember when they are nominated they are nominated at 1 position and that's the one the committee trys to put them on. I will also say this, some coaches will nominate kids and say something like this kid is probably not one of the top RBs to make the 1srt team but I think he is one of the top 15 to maybe make the 3rd team. Nothing is perfect and it never will be and maybe someday ESPN will cover all the iowa HS games so all the voters have a chance to see all the kids play but since that wont happen they rely on the recommendations of the players coaches and opposing coaches in and out of the district for info. I can tell you for sure that one particular coach whos team had a tremendous year only nominated 1 kid for 1 st team but nominated others for the other teams and I respect the hell out of that.

Just a thought but maybe this issue doesn't exist as much if there aren't 3 all state teams for offense and defense.....I know our districts defensive MVP didnt make 1 of the teams and he was nominated by the coach...but 2 other kids on the all district 1st team defense made an all state team. Not sure what the right answer is. Im not buying the we cant see all kids argument either. Writers with power I am guessing can sway the vote much like coaches can in other sports when determining all-district and all-state.

Thats a good point, maybe we have too many teams. I'll be curious to see the Des Moines Registers all state teams when they come out as thats only 1 team per class then an elite overall class and see how it corresponds with this all state team. As far as your districts MVP not making a team but others in your district did, maybe your district MVP was say a LBr but those positions were loaded with great players compared to the other two guys at other positions. What cant happen is move him to another position that they didn't play just because he was the MVP but I get your point. Here is something else thats makes it very tough for the all state committee and that is every district picks their teams differently. Some districts pick by position, some pick by how you finished in your district and yet others just pick say top 20 players regardless of position, so when things are sent to the committee things can be deceiving as to better players. What is discouraging is when people blame the all state people for who is on each team but their is a lot that goes into the info that they get in the first place. In the end all state is a piece of paper that people put time in to recognize athletes and take the time to do it at no benefit to them.
