Just something I noticed while gathering notes on the season so far ... Regina’s loss to Pella Christian Friday was the first time ever they’ve lost a regular season game to a 1A opponent. They’ve been in 1A since 2012.

Since 2008, Regina has lost a total of 9 regular season games, plus 4 losses in the playoffs. The regular season losses prior to last week were to Class 3A Xavier (4 times) and Solon (4 times, twice as a 3A team and twice when Solon and Regina were both 2A). The playoff losses were to Van Meter (2017), Western Christian (2016), Solon (2009), and Mid-Prairie (2008). That’s an overall record of 122-13 from the start of the 2008 season through this week, with 9 of those 13 losses to just two schools.

This is the second season in a row, though, that Regina has started 1-2, and with one loss finally being to a 1A competitor, are we about to see slippage in the Regal’s dominance on the east side? Last year’s 3-loss season was the first time they’ve ever lost more than 2 games. They still have Williamsburg on the schedule as well as sharing a district with Dike-New Hartford ... this could prove interesting.

While it has been a while since they lost to a 1A opponent in the regular season but they were 1A for a long time went up to 2A for 2 years then came back down. I don’t know for sure but it might be the first time Marv Cook lost to a 1A opponent in the regular season.

I was meaning, first time ever as far as I could find scores, which was 2008. First time in the Marv Cook era, for sure.

Also, I was using QuikStats to find scores/records and I couldn’t even find Regina listed in QuikStats prior to 2008 ... which is weird, because of course they were playing football before then.

First regular season loss to a 1A team since at least 2008. Okay?

Well just a little historical perspective up until 2002-03ish. Regina wasn’t very good. Through the 90s they were average. Nowhere near they are now. Kudos to them tho, last 15 years have been great football

Seems like their recruiting budget got a bit larger once Marv and Co. took over.

Regina loses more kids than they gain. But, it's always convenient excuse for those with no real insight.

Where did West Branch's do-it-all QB go to junior high? What city does he live in now?

People conveniently forget that even with all of the same 'advantages' that they currently have Regina was a vote away from dropping football. People wanted them in their district, for their homecoming game. They didn't piss and moan. They smiled and laughed. Kevin Miller showed up before heading to Solon and started the ball rolling, Chuck Evans and then Marv and company kept it going. Take your shots now.

Kevin Miller didn’t get any ball rolling. Regina was still a doormat or average. Credit goes to Chuck Evans and Marv. With vast knowledge of WB and Regina football I saw first hand what was being built and by who.

Oh no. Now we are on CID's favorite topic and he'll never shut up. Are we really going down this rabbit hole already? In 2019, Regina is hanging on to being significant by a hair. And this board is going to talk about it's recruiting budget?!?! I'd rather talk about 1A football on this forum. There is a lot of parity in 1A football and should be an exciting year to see how it plays out. Regina has been the standard over the past 10 years and that can't be denied. However, let's stick to talking about football and not recruiting. There are lots of quality teams to talk about this year. This topic gets beaten to death every year. Blah, blah, blah. Quite honestly, I don't know why people find it interesting.

Average was a step up from getting 50 pointed and almost dropping the sport.

Sorry to offend bj, you will find that I don't surface the issue, just respond to people who spout off without a clue.
To football, Regals should bounce back some this week. Not sure what happened at Williamsburg but they don't look solid. District will come down to the closing game. As far as PC their dline will be an area to watch. Not much variety on offense and the dline may not hold up. Better jay? Tell eagle to go back to setting point spreads he is better at that.

GoEagles took that lazy shot out of the blue. Blame him for bringing it up. I won't stop pointing out that it's not true and other nearby public teams do seem to 'recruit' new QB's regularly now.

Can we also try to remember that there are real kids trying to play their hardest and contribute wherever they are? I hope they're not reading this.

I don't think Regina is struggling to remain relevant, they are trying to teach kids, go out and win the next game and try to be around at the end of the season to make a run for a title game, just like every other program who has had a modicum of success.

You've not offended me, sorry if I offended you. My point is this recruiting topic has been beaten to death and typically comes up every 2-3 weeks and fills 3 pages of threads. Everyone points the fingers. It is what it is.

I guess my point is to everyone on the board. Perhaps especially those that take shots at schools for recruiting. Some schools do it and don't get blamed, some don't do it and get blamed, and some do it and do get blamed. My point is, at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. Kids are playing for who they are playing for. There is quality football in 1A and due to parity, could be the most exciting year yet. Especially if we skip the recruiting talk.

No idea. You tell me and then we will both know. Hasnt he attended WB for all 4 years of HS?

Please don't stir the pot. It's been talked about number times over a number of years. He came from City High after 8th grade. Enough about recruiting. How do you feel about the PC game tomorrow?

Try BCMoore's site. His records probably go back a bit farther.
