3A Title Game Talk - Wahlert vs. Xavier

Well, the Pella- Xavier game became more interesting and well- played in the second half. Didn't think Pella could be beat by a team that lost its last six regular season games in the MVC, the last one to Wahlert by 12 points, 68- 56. I really don't think this is the team Wahlert wanted to play, because of the revenge motive, which I think favors Xavier. The Golden Eagles played extremely well against Xavier a few weeks ago, and Cordell Pemsl, I think, had 35 or so points. You can bet that Xavier will figure some way to stop him. I think it will be a great championship game, with Xavier my pick to win it. Xavier is loaded for next year, while Wahlert returns not a single player from their top ten. All Wahlert's starters today have been playing together since third grade, and I know they will be very emotional for the finale.

xavier looked much better than they did in the first round maybe it is because they played such a crappy team
they were excellent vs Pella but maybe Pella was just being typical Pella at the state bball tourney beat up on bad teams lose to good ones
wahlert wins this one

Two pretty evenly matched teams who know each other well should make for a great game. Xavier will be motivated after losing last year, but I think Wahlert will be too good to knock off here. Pemsl and Wedewer are just such a great 1-2 punch and when they can get a couple other guys going they are so hard to beat. Burger is a great player though and will keep Xavier in it, if they can get someone to step up like Joens did against Pella they just could pull it off. I expect Wahlert to make sure that doesn't happen though.

It's hard to zone up against Wahlert because Pemsl is a good passer and Wedewer is very good from the outside. Tough to play just straight man because Pemsl is very good at getting position around the basket and finishing inside. Wahlert is definitely the favorite.

I don't think the "revenge factor" is that big of a deal. Both teams will be motivated win especially with a title on the line. I don't think Xavier will want it more or play better just because they already lost to Wahlert this year.

If the Burger kid hogs the ball and goes 2-10 again DW by 30.

Xavier is a quicker, faster team with balanced scoring. To win, Wahlert will have to own the boards and shoot lights out. And, are they healthy? Will be interesting.

Physical game so far, as was expected. Techau geting in early foul trouble could be big. Weird T on Xavier's coach, he must have said something the ref didn't like.

Congrats to Xavier clutch free throw shooting and much improved play after looking so horrid vs Spirit Lake in the first round. Losing big kid caught up with Wahlert, tough to win a title when you lose a starter this late in season, another title. Hurt Wahlert on D when Pemsl is allowed to get into pass lanes they can really turn on the pressure. May have forgotten Pemsl on O a little too.
Congrats to Xavier well done

If you had told me Wahlert would shoot that well, I would have guessed Wahlert would have won. Xavier flat out beat Wahlert on the boards and in hustle. Xavier deserved to win that game. No clue what the coach said that was worthy of a T.

I will now become a DBQ Senior fan as Wahlert has NOTHING on the bench for next year. Oh, they are going to be bad.

Xavier played the better floor game and deserved to win their first state championship. Congratulations to them. I knew this was a bad matchup for Wahlert, especially down one really good starter in 6-7 Sage Maiers, who was hurt vs. MOC.. Xavier had more speed and terrific ball handlers, who missed a lot of the games they lost-- so their record was deceiving. Tears flowing heavily for the Wahlert players, but they had a tremendous run with two firsts and a second place finish. You could see this team coming years ago and they probably exceeded expectations. Cordell had a tremendous year-- really the first year he's been healthy. I think he deserves Mr. Basketball and I hope he gets it. Xavier returns soph Joens, soph Mims and Techau, pus others. Wahlert returns nobody and wins will be at a premium next year but it will still be fun to watch all the games and all the teams.
