Which team wins? Do either of these teams have title hopes? What are the chances of an upset?

If Burger plays, Xavier should be favored. One thing I'll say is that the two Spirit Lake stars can rebound so that takes away from Xavier a bit inside. Xavier by 5 if Burger plays. If not, Spirit Lake by 5.

I think the winner of this will play Pella and I would flip a coin no matter what on that game. Wouldn't be shocked about a title for either team but would be a little surprised with anyone but Wahlert winning.

Some think Xavier is better when Burger doesn't play. Struggles vs. good teams.
Just saying.

Kriener usually has a heyday against smaller opponents.
Xavier doesn't list their size on QuickStats. How big are their posts?

The 2 game films against Western Christian will be the primer for beating Spirit Lake.

I really like Spirit Lake's chances against Pella if they get past this one.

I think this should be a really good game. Xavier has the better all around team, but Spirit Lake will have the two best players on the court. If Spirit Lake can get some other guys to contribute they should win, if not Kriener and Brown will need to have huge games for them to get a W. If Burger plays I would give Xavier the slight edge in this one.

Xavier has a couple of 6'7" posts.

Too close to call, with a very slight nod to Xavier because of their depth and the tough competition they've had to face all year. A lot of their losses were without Burger or Mims toward the end of the year, when their schedule was at its toughest. Their real strength, though, is that they have two really mobile and talented 6-7 players in the middle, especially Max Techau. Tall Billy Brown should be able to launch his shots over the diminutive Saints guards. I think Brown and some of the players not named Kreiner will have to have big games to beat Xavier. Just two players won't be able to carry Spirit Lake, I'm afraid.

I would be surprised if Spirit Lake doesn't win with their 2 D 1 players.
Just because a team has two D1 players does not necessarily give them an advantage. Bball is a team sport and some teams are much more efficient together than any of the single players. I remember a 1A team in the 90s that had two D1 bigs (Settles(Iowa)/Edwards(ISU)) for two years and could never win a State Championship. Both were great team players, but there were some other teams that as a whole could finish. That was at 1A, where you would think 1 D1 player should carry a team.

Also, there are some teams (like Pella) where a large number of players don't play in the AAU circuit so they won't even be recruited, but could be nearly as good as someone with a D1 scholarship.

I think that if playing smart, Spirit Lake could win this (especially if Burger doesn't play), But their significant losses to Western C(great team, smaller class, fewer D1 players) shows that a good "team" can beat them. IMO Xavier can be a very good "team" type club.

Should be a great game!

Like we usually find out these small town Iowa boys the dream of being Hawks would be off D2 or NAIA schools. North Dakota is basically that. Xavier rolls SL , have you seen those other players besides 'd1' guys. They are terrible. Then throw in that coach LMAO

North Dakota is not the same as an NAIA school. Maybe a TOP TIER NAIA school. But North Dakota would wax your average NAIA or D2 schools.

You are thinking of North Dakota St. North Dakota is not very good in hoops and haven't been for a while. Maybe .500 or below this year.

No I am thinking of North Dakota. The place Brown is going. They aren't a very good D1 program. And you know what? They played a D3 School and blasted them by 30 and two NAIA schools and won both of those by 20+. A bad D1 team is better than your average NAIA or D2 school. That is what we are talking about.

Using the logic above on D1 vs D3, NAIA, then Xavier should crush SL, since SL lost by almost 20 twice to a 2A school with no D1 players (although I think VanLingen could play at higher level than Dordt). Getting a scholarship is tough business to any school, so I am not knocking it. I think both are great players. If Xavier can neutralize Brown, I don't think Kreiner can carry the load vs. the rest of Xavier's squad. Xavier won't let Kreiner score more than 30. SLs supporting crew will have to play the best defense of their season to get past this one.

I wasn't using the D1 or NAIA argument to compare Spirit Lake and Xavier. None of that matters. I was
Simply saying you can't compare NAIA average schools or D2 average schools to even low D1. That's it.

Spirit Lake is one of the smallest schools in 3a at 320 enrollment. Xavier is one of the largest at 541. MOC is another very small school in 3a.

I predict Xavier winning. Spirit Lake has two really good players, but not much else really. Backhaus is ok. It all depends on how dominant Kreiner is.

Does anyone know if Burger is playing?

Watching that game answered everything you needed to know about SL. #3 seed what a joke. Good thing SL got a freebie to state, they certainly didn't deserve it.
