The 4A and 3A substates are out, as announced this afternoon by the IHSAA.

4A looks pretty well distributed as they did move teams around to get the supposedly best eight in different brackets.

Substate 1- Top teams are Ankeny and SC East
Substate 2- Dubuque Senior and CR Prairie stand out
Substate 3- North Scott, Waterloo West and CR Kennedy make this a tough bracket
Substate 4- Cedar Falls, Dubuque Hempstead and Linn-Mar are top
Substate 5- Iowa City West should best Davenport Central
Substate 6- Ankeny Centennial is favored over Indianola and Johnston
Substate 7- Waukee and WDM Valley are the best
Substate 8- CBAL and WDM Dowling will fight it out.

Pretty good balance, I think. Substates 2 and 5 may be the easiest.for ICW and Senior to get to state.

3A isn't quite as even, but I think the state tried their best to move teams around to get balance.

Substate 1- Carroll looks to be above MOC, LeMars and SB- Luten
Substate 2- Ballard and Clear Lake seem to be the best
Substate 3- Marion, CPU and Waverly will duke it out
Substate 4- CR Xavier, Mt. Vernon, Central DeWitt and Dub. Wahlert give that substate 4 top 20 BC Moore teams.
Substate 5- Davenport Assumption favored over Clear Creek- Amana
Substate 6- Pella has to fight off Osky, Newton and Grinnell in a good substate
Substate 7- Norwalk will have to fend off Gilbert, ADM and DC- Grimes in a tougher substate than I thought they would get
Substate 8- Winterset, Glenwood, Denison-Schleswig and Harlan make this another really tough substate

I think 1, 4, 6, 7 and 8 are all tough substates, with 2 and 5 seemingly the easiest. I think the IHSAA did the best they could. Lots of teams moved around to get balance. What does everyone think?

Substate 2 would be the weakest 4A substate in my opinion..substate 4, wow, CF vs Hempstead is going to be very interesting.

In 3A, substate 4 is crazy tough, hard to pick one out of that bracket.

Bravos-- Hempstead has been struggling lately. Cedar Falls got a good draw. And yeah, 3A Substate 4 also has two of the top 4 power-rated teams- Xavier and Mt. Vernon (and two more top 20), so when and if they meet, that's a state tourney matchup, not a district or substate match, strength-wise. Another way to look at how tough this substate is- six times since 2014, Central Clinton, Xavier and Wahlert have played in the title game.

I think the state did a great job with 4A and 3A this year. Here are my picks from each substate:

4A
Substate 1: Sioux City East...Coach Vanderloo always get them to The Well
Substate 2: Senior with a cake walk to state
Substate 3: North Scott...they always defend at a high level and will be able to slow WW down
Substate 4: Cedar Falls over Hempstead in a competitive final
Substate 5: IC West with very little resistance.
Substate 6: Centennial...boast around 4 D2 caliber players and a great coach
Substate 7: Waukee...is this finally their year to step up and win it?
Substate 8: Tough one but I give the edge to Dowling

3A
Substate 1. Carroll looks very strong
Substate 2. Slight edge to Ballard
Substate 3: Marion with an easy trek to The Well
Substate 4: Xavier steps up and finds a way
Substate 5: Assumption earns a cake walk to state this season
Substate 6: Pella gets it done over Osky
Substate 7: Norwalk...Bowen Born enough said
Substate 8: Going with Winterset

Should be an exiting tournament. Not a bad mix up. Can’t complain as Sioux City is out of the same substate they always are in with the Council Bluffs schools.
