And...here we go! Practice is underway for the 2018 soccer season.
Thoughts on the season this year? Who are the favorites? Teams to keep an eye on?

Any good scrimmages coming up prior to the first games?
Iowa City Regina will be scrimmaging at City High on March 26th. Always a good, fun test for two perennially strong teams.

Edit: Regina vs. City scrimmage moved to the 27th at 4:15 due to weather.

Well, I can tell you this. A program that is going to be much, much better than people think this year is Wahlert boys and girls. Boys are expected to be bad as they lost everyone. Seriously, they have NO seniors on the team. But they will be better than people think. Maybe .500. The girls have been really, really bad the last 3 seasons and that is about to change. Serious talent in the pipeline and the world will see it next week. Girls: .600 and birth to state.

You read it here first!

I think you bring up a great point. All too often the attention is placed on teams that are successful or continue the previous success of certain schools.

But, far more difficult and even more impactful to a program are the teams and groups of kids that can change the culture within the school. Building momentum and turning a sub-.500 program into a winning program. That takes a special class or group of kids and that kind of program turnaround is probably not celebrated enough.

Season is underway despite the fact that it still seems like winter outside. Weather has likely limited the ability to practice for many teams.

Some things that stand out so far this season:

The 3A preseason #1 team, Iowa City West dropped two games early to Ankeny and Ankeny Centenniel. But, they rebounded with a nice 2-1 win over 2A #1 CR Xavier.

West Des Moines Valley is the new #1 in 3A

Iowa City High got off to a nice 4-0 start, winning in dominating fashion so far.

Solon raced out to a quick 6-0 start before dropping their first game of the season 0-1 to Albia. They have a big top 5 ranked match up at Dyersville Beckman on Friday, which will be interesting to see how they compare.

Davenport Assumption may have played the toughest schedule so far, the highly ranked 1A school has early losses to 3A City High, West High and a close 0-1 loss to Bettendorf, along with nice wins over W. Liberty and Davenport North.

Solon defeats 1A #2 Dyersville Beckman on the road in a big game last Friday. That is back to back losses for Beckman and a big win for Solon.

CR Xavier falls to 0-3, but the losses have come to 3A teams.

CR Washington has been off to a strong start at 6-1. They have a match up with 6-0 City High scheduled for today that should be a good test for both teams.

This Friday is the City High vs West High game, to be played at the U of I soccer field. It is always a great game, come check it out if you can...

CR Washington hands City High it's first loss of the season in a game that went to a pk shootout.
Washington's Keaton Woods already has 22 goals on the season. Wow.
Sounds like both teams were missing key players, so I hope we get another match up down the road...

Great article about the game:

Assumption defeated Muscatine in a pk shootout as well. Very nice win for Assumption.

Solon continues to pile up victories, beating West Delaware, Manchester 4-0 yesterday.

There have got some be some other soccer fans with some thoughts on the season...jump in here...

Anyway, some big games from this past weekend:

Iowa City High gets two big wins over West High on Friday. The City High girls defeated West 4-0 for their first win over West since 2011. The City High boys defeated West 2-1 in front of a big crowd.
Here is a nice article about the game:

The Catholic School Tournament was held this weekend at Tuma. In past years these games have been previews of State Tournament games with some top 1A teams matching up.
1A top ranked Regina passed their first big tests of the season, defeating #6 Dyersville Beckman 2-1 and #2 Assumption 3-0.
Tonight the Regals will face a very tough game traveling to 3A #2 Bettendorf.

Some other scores from the Catholic School Tournament:
Assumption, Davenport 2, St. Albert, Council Bluffs 1
Beckman Catholic, Dyersville 2, Columbus Catholic, Waterloo 0
Columbus Catholic, Waterloo 1, St. Albert, Council Bluffs 0
Columbus Catholic, Waterloo 4, Assumption, Davenport 1
St. Albert, Council Bluffs 1, Beckman Catholic, Dyersville 0 (2OT PK 4-1)

? What? No, I think he is saying the Parochial schools are pretty strong in soccer and this tourney shows it....Just a guess......

Yep, thanks. Just based upon past years these teams are typically in the semi-finals and finals. But...you never know. I think it seems like the field in all classes may be a bit deeper than in years past. Should make for a fun playoffs and State Tournament.

1A top ranked Regina loses it's first game of the season on the road at 3A #2 Bettendorf last night. 1-0 in the 2nd overtime period.

City High knocked off Xavier 3-1 on Tuesday. Tough start to the season for Xavier at 2-5, they may be down a bit this year, but they have played a very tough schedule so far. Should pay off when they start matching up with more 2A schools.

CR Prairie beat CR Washington 2-1 in the second overtime period on Tuesday. These are a couple of teams that I think have a chance to make a run in the playoffs.

Western Dubuque upset Solon 2-0, which was a bit of a surprise.

Should be a great game tonight as a pair of 3A top 5 teams face off. CR Prairie travels to Iowa City High. That is a State Tournament caliber match up.

Then this Saturday, City High will play two undefeated teams in Ankeny Centennial and Bettendorf.

That sounds like a strange situation. Regina lost a game in overtime last week on a pk given when the keeper punched away a ball in the box and the ref said the keeper hit a player trying to head the ball. Tough break.

Lots of tournaments around the state this past weekend with some big games.
Some highlights:
Marshalltown with 3 wins
Hudson with 3 wins
Gladbrook-Reinbeck with 3 wins
Perry beat Norwalk 2-1

Yeah - heard the only way the other team scored was PK's. Was there a lot of flopping by the other team as well?

I wasn't at the game, so I can't speak to that. But, I would say that IMS looks to be a very formidable team. They remain undefeated and have some nice wins. They had a strong team last year, and they look even better this year. They are in Solon's substate bracket, so I would imagine those two might battle it out for a spot in the State Tournament.

Regina and Solon match up this Thursday in what might be a State caliber game.

Turns out the Regina vs. Solon game tonight will be a 1A #1 vs #2 match up. Regina is coming off of a big Tuesday night win over 3A #10 Pleasant Valley. Solon recently defeated 2A #15 Central Dewitt.
The weather looks perfect, should be a great game to check out if you're in the area. Looks like a 6 pm start at Regina.

Hopefully the guy that was the head ref at the game last night in DeWitt never ref's another game.

This is what happened:

2-1 game with <min left. Home team brings the ball down, it's kicked out of bounds. Home team player "A"grabs ball from ground and the ball boy gives a ball to another player "B" - B throws the ball in, clock winding down, player A who is walking on the field with the other ball decides to kick the extra ball over the bleachers. Visiting team kicks the ball in play out of bounds again (not out of the back) pretty much even with the 18yd box. Of course the ball boy doesn't have a ball due to player A kicking it over the bleachers, the ref stops the clock until a ball is provided, home team gets a corner kick (remember the ball was kicked out of bounds by the 18yd box by visiting team). Clock should have continued to run....

Corner kick ensues - time runs out - ref calls a foul, won't say on who or what it was just "a foul happened" inside the penalty area - gives home team a penalty kick - they tie the game. Visiting HC is obviously (and rightfully) upset and lets the ref know.

Overtime - visiting team scores about 2min in.

Is it really that hard to officiate a game? I appreciate aggressive play, last night was beyond aggressive for both teams (as the ref had ZERO control).
He called delay of game for the most part. We had a ref call delay of game on our Goalkeeper in club with 5 seconds left and leading 1-0 as he was kicking the ball. He counted a 7 count, yes the rule is 6 seconds but it supposed to be significantly longer than 6 to call delay. Luckily the goalkeeper stopped the free kick from the top of the box.

Attended the Regina vs Solon game tonight. Great game. Final was 2-1 Regals in a game that went 10 rounds deep into PK's.
That makes it sound like a close game, but Regina dominated possession and scoring chances with numerous opportunities that narrowly missed. Solon struggled to string together more than 3 passes and were forced to continually look for a long ball counter attack.

Regina and Solon both feature outstanding goalkeepers. Really impressed by both of them.
Two great teams put on a great game tonight in front of a big and energetic crowd. Lot of fun.

And, the playoffs are in full swing. Two rounds in and we've lost some good teams. This Saturday will be the sub-state finals and feature some great match ups. Any games that people are looking forward to in particular?

In 1A the two previous state champs match up with Beckman traveling to Regina. Also, IMS and Solon play for a trip to State. Should both be great games.

Assumption beat Wahlert in a darn good game.

Regina beat Beckman. Honestly, theat Regina team is good looking. Maybe one the the teams out of the west that I have not seen can beat them, but otherwise they will be taking the trophy.

Regina and Beckman have combined to win 8 of the last 9 1A State Championships. Regina snapped Beckman's State appearance streak today while extending theirs to 11 straight with a 3-1 win.
Regina dominated possession and scoring chances. Beckman tried to out muscle the Regals, picking up 3 yellow cards, but it didn't work as they chased the ball most of the afternoon.
This is one of the better Regina teams in recent years, but lots of quality teams are still playing.

I'm very impressed by the IMS 3-0 win at Solon. Those were the 2nd and 3rd ranked teams. Big road win for IMS, qualifying for State for the first time since fall soccer. IMS handed Regina their only 1A loss this season. They are on opposite sides of the bracket, so that could be a great rematch, if it were to happen.

Other east side State qualifiers include: City High, West High, Williamsburg, CR Prairie, Xavier and Marion.

Pine, why did IMS get a 6 seed? Sounds like theyve been hosed all year long in the rankings. I’ll hang up and listen

They didn't play a tough enough schedule it would seem. From the Soccer Manual:

The state tournament will use the following format: a) State tournament pairings will be determined using a seeding method of pairing. Teams will be seeded using a point system. A victory over a 3A team would result in 3 points, a 2A team, two points and a 1A team 1 point. The point total would be divided by the number of games played. If two teams have the same overall point average, the following criteria will be used to determine the higher seed:
1) The first tiebreaker is head to head competition; if no head to head competition; go to next tiebreaker.
2) The second tiebreaker will be the average goals against per game.
3) The third tiebreaker will be the average goals scored per game with the maximum margin being +5 goals. Example: Team A defeats Team B 13-0, the goal margin would be +5, or 5-0. Team A defeats Team B 9-1, the goal margin would be a maximum of +5, or 6-1.
4) The fourth and final tiebreaker would be using the alphabet. For 2018, FIRST alphabetical will receive the higher seed.

But, I don't think IMS should be too upset with their seed. It puts them on the opposite side of the bracket of top ranked Regina and also allowed them to avoid Assumption and Gilbert (strong teams who they haven't played) while potentially having to face Williamsburg in the Semifinals, a team they have previously beaten this season. IMS probably has the easiest path to the Final of any team in the 1A field.

Bracket:
https://apps.iahsaa.org/secure/bracket.php?year=2018&sport=sc&class=1A&state=1

The 1A State Quarterfinals are complete:
Regina 3, Treynor 0
DM Christian 4, IMS 0
Williamsburg 2, Nevada 1
Gilbert 1, Assumption 0 (2 OT)

I guess IMS didn't have the easiest path to the finals after all. Looks like that #6 seed for IMS may have been correct. Very impressive win by DM Christian. They have been putting up big goal numbers all season, and feature the leading scorer in the state, Ben Webster who had a hat trick today. They hadn't played many top teams, but they certainly look like a definite contender.
Gilbert with a big double overtime win to knock out Assumption, a finalist from last season.

Well, the boys season has come to an end. Congrats to the State Champions! Iowa City Regina, Pella and Waukee.

Recap:

1A - Iowa City Regina repeats as the 1A Champion, making it 7 Championships in the past 10 seasons. The win ties the Regals with Xavier for the 2nd most Titles, two behind West High with 9.
They faced a Des Moines Christian team which set the state scoring record this season with 130 goals, behind an incredible 61 goals this season from senior Ben Webster.
But, the Regals slowed their offense to only a pk, while freshman Alec Wick scored twice to lead the Regals to a 2-1 win.
5 of Regina's 7 State Tournament goals were scored by freshman, with the other two coming from freshman assists. The future looks bright for Regina as Wick burst onto the scene on the biggest stage of the season.

2A- The semi-finals featured a match up between the only two remaining undefeated teams, Marion and Storm Lake. Storm Lake scored early against a Marion team coming off a 5-4 shootout over Newton, and held on for a 4-1 win. Pella knocked out Xavier with a late header to advance to the Finals. Two late goals (in the 73rd and 78th minute) gave Pella the comeback victory over Storm Lake and the 2A Title.

3A- This 3A field seemed very deep this year with no clear favorite and that became evident when the #8 seed Waukee knocked off Valley, West High and Bettendorf on their way to the Championship. City High looked to again have a shot this year, but came up short losing 1-0 to Bettendorf, a team they had defeated 3-0 earlier in the season. The 3A game of the tournament was likely the 4-3 Bettendorf win over Ankeny, when Bettendorf came back from an 0-3 deficit to win in overtime.

So time to move up a class?

Every season is different with a new group of kids. Soccer in general may be more top heavy because certain schools have built a soccer culture, where others haven't yet. But, the sport continues to grow and the quality of teams across the state will too.

The girl's State Soccer Tournament begins this Thursday.

The girls State Semi-Final matches are today. The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Association is actually streaming the games for free. A great move that I wish the Boys Association would do as well. It would help showcase the state's top talent and teams to more people, helping to raise the profile of the sport and the state overall.

Games start at 11 AM today.

The class system is somewhat broken in soccer but I when you have the multiple school combining I am not sure how you fix that. When you have traditional class 2a and 3a schools playing for titles in the small school rank you could look into fixing it but I am at a loss as what to do.
