Finally I can see football in my near future, it seems like forever since last years championship game was played. Can't wait for late August to get here and provide my Friday Night entertainment again.
This post is a great question, a lot of teams seem to have a stellar Offensive or Defensive Player but few have one on each side of the ball. I spent some time thinking back to the games I watched last season then reviewed under class-men to see who would be returning. There is great talent returning this year all over the state including the DSM Metro and West which I know and watched play last year.
Waukee has some excellent Defensive talent ( Morrison)
Dowling has Waggoner on Defense, we all have read about him.
Ankeny has Baugher who is a tackling Machine
Roosevelt has Jackson who is very legit, size/speed and a great athlete
CBLC has Theobald who is a passing QB's nightmare.
A bit tougher on the Offensive side:
Ank has Hill who is a do everything and should have a great year
Valley has Mason who without Rocky will need to have a breakout year.
Dowling has Ross but unfortunately I excluded OL. They also have the transfer RB
CBLC has Duggan who we've seen or read about, great young talent.
It's really hard to identify teams with impact players on each side of the ball which was how the question was written. Also I am NOT including O-Line and we all know there are some studs coming back on the O-line statewide
So here is my top 3 based on last year viewing, keep in mind I am not suggesting that any of the teams listed below are the tops teams for this upcoming season as we all know 1 good player does not necessarily make for a good Offense or Defense. It's why I like Ank Cent so much, great all around Team D.
Top 3
1) Duggan and Theobald ( CB Lewis Central)
2) Hill and Baugher ( Ank)
3 Waggoner and ? (Dowling) You just know it will happen
I also plan on making some eastern games this year, I know there is some special talent in eastern Iowa.
Really fun question, I'm ready for kick-off.
