Not much discussion so far. But, some interesting results...

The unanimous pre-season #1 ranked team, Linn-Mar goes down already in the opening weekend, 3-2 to Ankeny.

Iowa City High and Iowa City West are off to strong starts, with both teams sitting at 3-0. West defeated the Ankeny team that knocked off Linn-Mar. City has already beaten three top 15 programs in Dowling, Muscatine and Pleasant Valley.

Solon is off to a fast start and is scoring a lot of goals in the process. Solon sits at 4-0 after winning three games over the weekend. They defeated a pretty good Bellevue Marquette team 8-0.

Lots of games on the schedule for this coming week. Some cold and windy conditions so far this season, hopefully we'll see the end of that soon.

Sure seems like City West is closer to their old self... And City High has been very impressive so far. The MVC will be quite the gauntlet once again.

City High jumps to #1 in the latest 3A rankings. All 3 Iowa City high schools are ranked in the top 3 of their respective classes with IC West at #3 in 3A, and IC Regina moving up to #2 in 1A.

The 2016 girls season kicked off this week. City High will face Regina this year, which should be an interesting match up.

What is Solon's reason for early scoring? Are they improved since last year?

Yes, that should be a great match up. Two State Tournament qualifiers from a year ago. Both off to strong starts. It should be an interesting early season test for both teams.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck hands Regina its first loss of the season 2-1. Any details on the game?

Today, the Regina girls soccer team got a very impressive win over 3A state contender Iowa City High, 1-0 was the final.

Solon continues their strong start with a 3-2 win over Anamosa.

GR controlled possession for the majority of the game. Regina played much better in the second half. Their lone goal perfectly placed into the top shelf. GR had a few other opportunities to score that came up empty. Along with being much more physical, GR had better team speed. GR isnt very deep at all. That could cost them later on down the line. They have upcoming matches with Waverly and Decorah. I'm interested in seeing how they do against some bigger schools.

Had a chance to talk with someone who attended the GR-Regina game. It sounds like it was very physical with at least one yellow card. It was also mentioned that the GR field isn't regulation, not sure if that's true or not. But, that GR had a kid that could take throw ins and get them into the penalty area, almost like a corner kick. Big home field advantage if true.

Some big results yesterday:
#3 Iowa City West completely controls #4 CR Prairie in a 3-0 win. West moves to 7-0.
#2 Iowa City High defeats 2A #1 CR Xavier 3-1 in a great match up of highly ranked teams.
#7 Ankeny defeats 2A #2 Norwalk 2-1.
Unranked 3A Cedar Falls defeats 2A #4 Waverly-Shell Rock 2-1.

There will be lots of games this Saturday as numerous tournaments occur across the state.

GR's field falls into expected field size regulations.
Looking forward to match-ups with 2A (13) Decorah, (10) Hudson, and (4) Waverly.

Quick response on the GR Regina Game- The game was played predominantly in the middle of the field, which you would expect from two good teams. One team capitalized on one more shot than the other. Both teams looked a little sloppy but it is early so both have room to improve.
The field is sized like any other small school that plays on their football field or converted football field. There is no one regulation size but a range and GR falls within the range. We have played on narrower and shorter fields, I would have suspected Regina has also but maybe not.
I fully expect both teams to be competing well into post season.

Dyersville Beckman takes down Regina 2-1, and then Xavier 3-2 to win the Catholic Schools Tournament over the weekend. At this point, the defending champs look like the team to beat in 1A.

After a disappointing loss last week to Decorah, a match which they felt they could have won. GR rebounded with a win vs 3 Waverly Shell Rock last night 1-0.

The sub-state assignments have been released:
http://www.iahsaa.org/soccer/2016-soccer-substate-assignments/

1A #2 Regina defeated 1A #3 Solon 3-2 Saturday, on a cold, windy and rainy day.

Beckman continues their unbeaten season with a big away win last week over 2A highly ranked Central Dewitt.

Iowa City West scored a big 3-0 win last week over top ranked 2A CR Xavier.

The City vs. West game in a couple of weeks (May 17th) is going to be one that shouldn't be missed. Both teams look to have potential Championship quality.

Iowa City West travels to Bettendorf on Thursday which should be a great game. Solon travels to Beckman this week as well.

Highlights from this past week:

IC Regina wins the Nevada Tournament this past weekend, with impressive wins over Marshalltown, Nevada and Des Moines Hoover.
Hudson defeats Gladbrook-Reinbeck 2-0, handing them their second loss of the season.
Beckman continues to roll, easily defeating Solon 4-0.
Bettendorf is coming on strong, handing IC West their first loss before following that up with wins over Dowling, Ankeny and Muscatine.

The first round of post-season playoffs are in the books. Any big surprises? The Marshalltown score is disappointing to me, even youth teams know when to let up and work on other facets of the game.

Should be some good match ups coming up on Wednesday for the 2nd round. Pleasant Valley at City High should be a great game.

Big evening of playoff games last night. Some quality teams are now matching up and the game should be great from here on out.
Any big surprises?

Danville was knocked out by Albia. Danville entered with just three loses, two to larger competition.
Beckman played a close game with Columbus Catholic, who had a good team even though the record might not have shown it.
West Liberty went to Solon and knocked them out. Solon had been ranked as high as 3rd early in the year.
Dubuque Wahlert defeated Decorah. Decorah had only three losses on the year, all 0-1 scores.
Davenport Central eliminated Muscatine in PK's.

In the only match up of Top 10 teams in 1A, Regina defeats Benton Community to advance to their 9th straight State Tournament.
Columbus continues their outstanding season.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck slips past Gilbert on a PK for the only score of the game.
West Liberty puts together a nice run, knocking out Solon and Anamosa to return to State.
City High continues to look like Championship favorites with a big win over Davenport Central.
The West vs. Bettendorf game lived up to hype, with West advancing on a goal from a free kick with just 5 minutes remaining.

Nice 1-0 win for the GR rebels. Hopefully Thede is ok. He is probably their best all around offensive player. Any other score updates?

Wahlert def Heelan (4-3 PKs)
Norwalk 6 - Mt Vernon 0
Hudson 3 - CR Xavier 2
Storm Lake 2 - ADM Adel 1

Hudsons game winner came from the midfield stripe, right off the kickoff, as Xavier's keeper was caught too far from goal just seconds after Xavier equalized.

Tomorrow:
Wahlert v Storm Lake
Hudson v Norwalk

Down 1-0 at the half, Regina explodes for 4 second half goals to defeat Pella Christian. That equals the most goals PC gave up all season.
1A Semifinals are set, with the teams many expected would be there. Disappointed that the brackets set up #1 Beckman vs. #2 Regina prior to the Championship. But, these two teams have seemed destined for a rematch, and it should be great.
I think I'm going to be able to head up to Cownie tomorrow and catch the game.

I was shocked when i heard the halftime score of the Regina game. not so socked when i saw the final. looks like the GR Regina game ended up being for the 2 seed.

Congrats to the GR boys on 3rd place. I wonder if 2 wins vs Regina will be enough to be ranked ahead of them? ;) GR's goalie about needed carried off the field on Sat. He dislocated his hip in the Semi game Friday. Then suffered an ankle injury in the 3rd place game Sat. That toughness is fueled by GR's head coach. After seeing his youngest son play his last game, Dinsdale decided it was time to step down. He started coaching his kids in Rec league and followed them into high school. For never actually playing the game, he has been VERY successful.

Well, the 2016 boys soccer season has come to an end.
Congrats to the State Champions!

3A - West Des Moines Valley
2A - Norwalk
1A - Dyersville Beckman

In 3A Valley takes down previously undefeated Iowa City High, who was looking for their first ever state title. Valley came in with a game plan to sit back and look for counter attacking opportunities and it paid off with a 3-1 win and Valley's first Championship in 10 years.

In 2A, Norwalk defeated Storm Lake late in the 2nd OT period in what looked to be an own goal from a free kick set piece. The ball skimmed off a Storm Lake defenders head and found the back of the net. The Championship gives Norwalk three total in their history, 2007, 2014 and 2016.

In 1A, Dyersville Beckman completed their undefeated season defeating Carroll Kuemper 2-1. The win ran the Blazers winning streak to 40 matches and gave them back to back Championships, the first two in program history.
